What equipment...

Being new here, I have been looking around, and finding this site very useful People seem very friendly

One thing im not sure about, is why do some people put what equipment they own at the bottom of there replies. Is this a battle of the whos got what?
A status symbol?
Or does this actually help in some way answer some questions?

Im sure the answer lies somewhere inbetween these two in many cases.
Thoughts?

I used to put details of the equipment in my sig as sometimes people would sometimes want to ask what equipment one uses to get a particular shot.

However....... i took it off and just have a flickr link now, for no particular reason

To be honest I think its just to inform people what equipment they've used for certain shots, not to show off. I find it quite helpful at times, although I used to list my gear but don't bother now.

Some people say it's good to know what was used to take a certain shot. Personally, I think that's rubbish and if anything it's counter productive.

Put the kit first and you'll never be more than a camera operator.

I think the only acceptable kit list would read like....... crop sensor camera, short tele, long tele, wide zoom, flash..... etc

Filling in all the model numbers might as well just be adding the cost as far as I can see.
