Hey guys!

Could you give me a quick overview of the different kind of things I need to do in order to do light painting.

Amazon links would be great too!

Also can lasers be damaging to the DSLR?

Many Thanks

A lot of the complicated light painting you see will not be done with off the shelf light painting tools, most will have been done with tools that have been made up for purpose sometimes from components but quite often from pre made items...small sets of battery powered LED's can be wonderful bits of kit for all sorts of tools

What type of things would you like to create?

Lasers can damage your sensor but only rarely from my experience, but that said if your concerned don't point a laser at your sensor

What I want to do is do the "basic" light painting, something like this:

Some slightly more complex things like this:

and the orb stuff like this:

I already know what you need for the steel wool photography

The first two will just be a fairly standard torch

The others will be mostly made up of tools made with battery powered Christmas LEDs

The last one is likely again Christmas LEDs used for the orb taped up to make a cluster and I'm guessing a cluster laser for the light painting onto the ground of the last one

I'll be able to answer more for you once I'm on the computer rather than my phone

KK thanks I await your full response

Right having looked a bit closer now that I'm on my proper computer rather than phone/ipad the one that I wasn't totally sure about was the water reflection shot...now looking at my guess would be that the green and red was done with pole (broom stale) with LED's spaced along it...this has then been moved in a consistent ark type movement to get this effect...I suspect the purple light is just a couple of LED's on the end of a pole that have been turned on and then moved around as seen here

I'm a specialist in this type of photography as you'll tell from my forum signature...I do have various guides on the forum already but also have a general Q&A thread that you can find HERE

Thanks I checked your tutorials on light trails and steel wool, great stuff there!

Would you be able to recommend some specific LED things that I would be able to purchase off Amazon in order to achieve some of this? Thanks.

The one with the water (green and red arches) I was thinking was done with a wheel similar to the dome tool but rolled along the ground in a straight line rather than around a spindle at an angle as in the domes.

Looking at it...that could well be the way it was done..my only reason for not thinking that was it looks a little wobbly but that could be more down to the operator ;)
