I see some videos on youtube with Crop mode in the title, what does it mean and how is it done?

Some full frame cameras can be used with lenses designed for crop sensor bodies and can be set to crop mode which crops the image (cuts off the sides and top/bottom) to remove the vignetting that crop lenses generally cause.

Some full frame cameras can be used with any lens in crop mode, not just DX lenses.

Very true but not much point IMO! Better to crop in PP.

In some FF cameras, crop mode blackens the cropped off areas which can be a PITA if you want to see what's about to appear in shot. Staying in FF mode (even when using Dx lenses) shows all the available area to help anticipation. Even with some crop lenses, the area of projected image is larger than the Dx crop area.

Aside from getting a bit more in-camera 'reach' from lenses, the other benefit of crop modes is that you can output a significantly smaller file sizes, which I expect is a big bonus for sports togs who want to get their files transmitted quickly. Plus, in some instances, the fps increases when the crop mode is activated. Crop modes can have an effect on the number of AF points available though.

I loved the crop mode on my D2x, really useful.
