Edit My Images
No
Hi all , I been out of practice for so long , with both my photography and editing ect , bad health issues have kept me locked in pretty much since last March . Anyway I am getting itchy feet now , both for the photography and the editing . Some time ago I purchased the above software . I am however quite lost with how to get the best from it . Be pre-warned before you try to explain anything that I am quite thick . o_O

I shoot on Canon SLRs and from what I can make out the Topaz has to convert the raw files to DNG before it will work magic on them yes ?

This means that once run through Topaz you can not work further on them as raw files in Canon`s DPP ?

It also seems to sharpen the images as it works , has it not been drummed into us to do the sharpening at the very last stage of enhancement ? I feel it has taken a fair deal of control away here .

I have also learnt that photos for the web require a different amount of sharpening for what they do for printing , so I am at a total loss of how much sharpening or if I should be adding sharpening at the end for either web or print .

So I would really appreciate any advice , or indeed what your workflow is involving this software .

Cheers Mark .

I don’t use canons software but this is how I use it in PS .. take no notice of making it the first stage process your image at full size doing all the needed colour adjustments etc . Crop your image how you like no point de noising what your not using .. once your happy with the look then apply denoise to the full sized image .. then resize for the web .. job done .
Make sure your de.noise is up to date as the latest versions are far better than last years giving you 3 options just choose which works best for you

Thanks Jeff , that`s another spanner in the works , suggesting not making it the first step . o_O :) .What are your thoughts on the sharpening side of things ? Do you still add more sharpening last thing ? What about printing as this needs more sharpening than pics for the web . Thanks for dropping in some tips and advice . I updated it last week so should be good on that side of things .

It all depends on your actual focus in the photo , if needed but only if apply a touch of smart sharpen but again that needs PS. Printing I rarely do as SWMBO made me take down the last entire wall of prints LOL

Hi Mark
I use Topaz DeNoise AI as a plug-in with Lightroom CC to edit my Raw images. I do some minor editing and cropping of the Raw image first in LR, then I edit in Topaz set to Auto. It then can create 3 modes: AI Denoise; AI Clear; Low Light, and you can click on any or all 3 for it to process the image to different parameters - you then choose the best one to Save. I have it set up to save as a TIFF file which then is rendered and automatically opens in Lightroom. I then do any further editing in LR on this Tiff, and then export the final image as a Jpeg. All images then remain side by side in LR: the modified Raw + the Tiff + the Jpeg, and all can be access at any time in the future if I want to tweak them.

I find the amount of sharpening Denoise in Auto gives to be about right for the web, but you manually adjust to your hearts content! (printing is a different subject, as I print direct from Lightroom).

I don't use DPP or Photoshop myself, preferring instead to use just Lightroom CC to organise, edit and store all my images.

Russ :)

Thanks for the further comments . So Russ do you sharpen for prints as much as you did before you got the Denoise , or less ?

Mark,

you're right in that traditionally the experts told us to save NR and sharpening until the very last step, and then only after resizing.

However, Topaz are recommending that the work is done at an early stage. I don't know the specifics for this and I now use it early on, but I can't tell the difference in using it this way. Not that I've used it a huge amount though.

I still like to do the sharpening at the end though, so I knock off the sharpening in Topaz. I find my current way gives me far more control - just my personal preference.

You're also right about not using it in DPP4 - or if you can I've not found a way yet.

Hope the health concerns are easing

Mike

Nice to hear from you Mike , hope your well , thanks for the kind words regarding my health .

It feels like it`s going to be a constant battle for me this enhancing malarkey , I have thought about taking the sharpening off in the Topaz software , but not got round to trying it .
It would seem using Topaz takes out the option of using DPP if your going to make it the first stage of processing , unless you use it after the raw editing bit and save as a tiff or jpeg then . I might try the adjustments in DPP , and then run it through Topaz to see what happens with that too .

Thats similar to how I'm working.

RAW file into DPP4 and make the basic adjustments
Send it into photoshop where it opens as a TIFF. Create a new layer and run Topaz within photoshop
Carry on with any necessary adjustments within photoshop
Save as a jpeg

Mike

Thanks again Mike . Sounds like a plan Mike , I will try that sometime soon hopefully .

I do all my normal editing with LR first and at the point I would denoise (if needed) I would do this at the end of this LR Raw processing. I can either open the image directly in Topaz Denoise AI or as I will be moving to PS next, I will usually open the image in PS as a 16 bit TIFF. From PS I can use Topaz Denoise AI as filter. I also have Topaz Sharpen AI so, if using Denoise, I set the sharpening to zero. When I use Topaz Sharpen AI, I set the Denoise to Zero. I still save as a TIFF.
