What do people use the custom settings banks for?

I am trying to improve my efficiency and get the best out of my D700 and wondered what most people use the custom settings banks for???

I generally use one type of metering (matrix but I do have spot assigned to the custom function button in case of vastly different lighting in the scene), and can't think of scenarios where I would want to change a whole range of settings in one go. All environments are different and am really struggling to get my head around how these could possibly help.

Anyone use them and if so, what for???

I have a "General" setting and a "Sports" setting, plus a "Titting around" setting. Basically 90% of the time i'm in General, Sports is optimised for high-speed photography (e.g. its JPG instead of RAW, different focusing mode, etc), and Titting Around is a complete mess for experimenting with - then when I get things horribly wrong I can go back to General and things "just work"!

There are definatly way too many controls on the D700, all you really want would be 4 buttons to quickly shift between your prefered settings and do the rest via menus... same with lenses, but apparently its "pro" to have a million buttons to accidentally knock wrong then not realise because you would never change them normally.

I'm assuming these are the same as c1,2 and 3 on my canon 40d's mode dial? If so I use c1 for my base settings for my nightclub work, c2 for motorsport and c3 for studio. I just use them to get my most common settings in those environments and adjust to suit from there

What I've never been able to understand is why have both "Shooting menu banks A-D" and "Custom Settings banks A-D" but you can't link them together so you have to change your saved settings in two different places when changing role...that isn't at all tedious...

cheers... it seems for the type of photography I do then (all RAW, all continuous focussing etc.) their really would be no point...

My 60D only has one C setting. I have it set for birds in flight. Conveniently it's at the end-stop of the dial, so I can get to it quickly without looking. Useful if I see something like a heron coming my way.

Mine are set up as follows, very minor setting changes for each.

A) General hand held shooting, auto iso
B) Shooting on a tripod
C) Shooting with a flash
D) Wife mode
