Well after four months of owning my 1100d and still learning I'm looking for another lens. Currently have the kit lens (18-55) and a Sigma 55-200mm dc which trumps the kit lens in image quality. But I'm looking for a low light lens which can be used for street photography, indoor shots of lizards, snakes and other things.

Budget maybe £150 any suggestions?

50mm and a raynox 150
or maybe a old vintage 50mm and extension tubes, thatll be real cheap

Difficult to recommend just one lens. Anything I'd consider a good focal length would be too wide for reptile close-ups, and anything long enough for the close-ups would be too wide for street. But it's personal, your opinion on the focal length suitable for either or both situations may very.

My guess is that a two lens solution will be needed, something in the 30-50mm range for streetand something in the 85-100mm length for the reptile close-ups. The 50/1.8 is cheap but I personally think it's a litte too long for street/walkabout with an APS-C sensor camera but there are no budget-friendly 30/35mm alternatives I can think of. At the longer end the 85/1.8 is a good value lens. And a set of extension tubes would be handy to reduce the minimum focussing distance for the close-ups.

You already have suitable lenses to determine which focal lengths are right for you on each situation - so why not try with what you have (push the ISO and accept the noise) to see which focal length(s) suit you best. Then report back.

I quite like the results from the Sigma for reptile stuff so far. Only had it since Friday so tick the reptiles off. Would a 50mm be ok as a walk around lens. I find the kit lens very poor in low light.

You might be able topics up a canon 35mm f2 for that dosh but you would poss need to go through eBay and get lucky. Recommend for street low light stuff indoors and assume would be ok for your reptiles?

So the 50mm is not recommended then. I think I'd prefer to use my 55-200 with my reps as I can take it from a distance. Because if I get too close I just get licked or hissed at.

So looking really for a lens to take on holiday for street scene and low light street scene etc.

Well after having a fiddle around tonight (not the kinky kind) I I I like the focal length of my kit lens but I want something faster and with better image quality.

Something like a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 then. They're not hugely expensive but still a bit more than your £150 budget so you'd probably be looking second hand.

But if he sold the kit lens he would definitely be able to afford one second hand.

I'd recommend the tamron as a walk about for crop cameras

There is a copy of the tamron in the classifieds for only £125.

This is a bargain and I'd snap this up quick if I was you

Going back to this would the Tamron 17-50 be fast enough for night time street scenes?

fastest slr lenses are normally 1.4 primes, there's a few down to f1, but expensive and rare.

a 2.8 zoom is fair bit better than a kit zoom

Been really umming and ahhing over the 50mm 1.8 prime. Been playing with the kit lens and use it more towards the 40/55 end but it's poor in low light.

I know 50mm will be 80mm on my crop sensor but I like the blurred background effect with the 50mm

Get hold of a secondhand nifty-fifty and have a play with it. It's a really great lens for the price, if you don't like it then just sell it on.

I've got a 50mm 1.8 and I never liked it on my 20d (crop body) focal length and speed as it's the mk1 and never really gave me good images I've recently upgraded to a 5d3 (full frame) and bought the 85mm 1.8 to go with it and I love the lens and the focal length. Considering they are similar Lengths of 85mm and 80mm (1.6x50) they have a completely different feel.
