I'm looking at getting some new glass, I want a lens thats would be good for portriture, my idea being that I want to make a go of the photography lark (people, portrait, weddings etc) and to begin with I need practice. To practice I'm thinking about getting some studio time or assisting a pro wedding tog.

At the moment I'm not sure what would be a good buy?

a nikon 50mm 1.8
a tamron 90mm 2.8
a protaflash or similar studio setup
a sb-600 flash
or spending money renting a studio?

Im leaning to the tamron coz it sould be long enough and fast enough at weddings but also useable in the studio?????

with a budget of about £200ish quid

advise welcome
thanks

Just to throw something else into the mix I have just got the sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5 and its a cracking lens would be ideal for weddings and studio work. Warehouse express did a price match so I got it for £202.99 so nicely in budget.

I'd be inclined to say get the flash. You'll want a half decent one for that kind of stuff, and speaking from experience the SB-600 is great as an entry level flashgun. Also, being Nikon, it'll be right at home on your D70. Kerso should be able to sort you one out, and you'd have change from £200.

Personally (but I have no experience of this) I wouldn't spend the money using a studio. Buy the flash and try it out with some friends/family to get the hang of it, then shadow someone on a wedding for example (like you say). I bought the flash for this kind of thing, but haven't properly used it yet. I'm about to buy a 50mm F1.8 as well.

JOKE!

(no seriously ... its just a joke)

Is the Tamron lens you're considering their 90mm macro? If so you might find the AF a little slow for use at weddings if that's where your interest lies.

I think you can manage to get a 50mm 1.8 and the sb600 at a push for around 200.. worth the extra few pennies for what you´ll be covering with the two. I just bought a sb600 for 135 delivered (mint but second hand) and the 50mm 1.8 can be had for around 70/80 with ease.

I wouldn´t give up my 50mm 1.8 for anything, well maybe the 1.4 ;)
