Just been offered a Dynax 9, but to get it I would have to sell the newly-arrived GS645S... dammit! I would love the 9 but I only got half a film so far through the Fuji :( On the other hand, it's likely another chance on a Dynax at the price will not come along again... help!

Arthur :help: :bang: :bonk: :bang:

Well Arthur do you go with your head or your heart, that is the question and I think it must be the Heart, so it sounds to me like it,s the Dynax 9.;):)

you are mad. Either way, you are sunk. Now where is Mrs A?

As for me, I'm possibly going to get both the AX and Rx. Now thats certifiable

This is a real question right? Because it seems a tad lopsided to me.

This is a choice between a Minolta 35mm machine and a Fuji MF. That's a bit like saying I've been offered a really nice bottle of coke but I'd have to sell a vintage fine wine to get it.

Now if you don't like wine, it's a good deal. But since you bought the Fuji, I'm guessing you do.

Couldn't put it better myself!

End of the day you're either a hip shootin' 35mm kind of guy or a MF knob twiddler with a tripod. Both have their appeal but you're usually one or the other.

edit: I see it's a rangefinder. You have enough 35mm to sell other cameras and keep the Fuji and buy the 9, no?

From reading around and looking at Dynax kit I would not bother with the Dynax 9 as it adds very little to what you already have with the Dynax 7.

But if the Dynax9 is that cheap why not buy it anyway.

I am in a bit of similar situation my self with other kit :bang:

i don't agree . the 9 is the top, top, top 35mm you can wish for. the Fuji has a lot of issues as I've read. + it depends - what kind of photography are you into.

Sell a kidney instead, you've got a spare (or at least I presume you do, you might have already sold it);)

Well guys, as said, this is about the best 35mm camera out there (including the nikons) and the chance to get one is not something that comes along very often. Yes, I have the 7 so I know they are excellent cameras, and I would hate to see this go to a collector to sit on a shelf. The Fuji is a nice camera yes, and a RF too it's true - I like rangefinders and to have an MF one is one of those things I had yearned for... but so is the 9. If I am lucky then when my current tabletop sale finished I will have the pennies to have my cake and eat it too - but if not I am still in this quandary!

As for the point about wine and coke - I see it as the other way around :D

Is the D9 the one which had the different programmable cards that you put in the camera which change its settings?

Arthur, you've always struck me as a 35mm kind of guy - either full or half frame - lots of people within film and conventional seem to either already be shooting 120,5x4 or upwards or aspiring to do so. Personally, despite being an avid landscape shooter, I like 35mm. There are times where something a little larger would be nice - I admit to occasionally borrowing my mate's Bronica for those urges. I also like shooting panoramic stuff, where again I go for 6x12 on 120 film with my pinholga (as I can't afford an xPan - daren't even take up Ujjwal on his offer of a loan, as I KNOW i'd have to buy one! (see "sell a kidney"))

But, despite all the attractions of the bigger formats, I still keep coming back to 35mm. For my use it's the best series of compromises. And seeing as I'm not a good enough shooter that people are clamouring at my door to buy 4 foot wide enlargements of my shots, the main advantage of the larger format film is wasted.

So, I hope your table sale goes well, and raises enough to make the dilemma go away. I'm damned sure that I'd hate to have to make the decision. But I'm pretty sure that I know which way I'd go.

Dont think so. The card one was a much earlier model. Dynax 9/7 series was one of their last before merging with Konica.

Incidentally I always thought 7 was more advanced than 9 :D

Edit:

This is what wikipedia says :

The 7 is generally considered even more advanced in many respects than the Alpha/Dynax/Maxxum 9, making it the most advanced Alpha/Dynax/Maxxum. Amongst its many unusual features, it had a function which could emulate the 135 mm STF (Smooth Transition Focus) lens by doing multiple exposures while varying the aperture -- something never done neither before nor since. The 7 was the first camera to support SSM lenses

Since you already have a 7, why go for 9, Arthur?

No, this one is the all-singing-all-dancing top line best ever 35mm SLR ever made... imo. The card models were for an attempt to make decent cameras available to those with ... well, shall we say "limited experience"?

Arthur - you what you want ! you don't need us to tell that ! :)

Oh yes, I want it sure enough - can I afford it though with Mrs A looking over the shoulder?

BY - yes, you're right, I am a 35mm type of guy, I have to admit to a certain reluctance to press the shutter on the Fuji because it such a big piece of film to mess up... yet I have before now shot off a half roll of 35mm just to finish it and cook some earlier pics!

Hmm. Quick email flurry, looks like it's mine after all  Some stuff sold today and more will sell later so I *may* be able to keep the Fuji as well - I hope so because as I said, I have wanted one for ages... OK yes, I've wanted a 9 for even more ages too but to tell the truth the Fuji was always going to be cheaper and so much easier for me to get hold of.

...and that's what makes this world such a beautiful place. ;)

No-one can really tell you how to spend your cash but since you did ask us what you should do........

The dynax 9 might well be a cracker of a body buit lets face it, 35mm SLR bodies are pretty much just boxes to hold lenses. My personal favourite is the F1, for it's simplistic rock like approach.

As for Fuji MF stuff, I just love them all. They all share that oddball design where each one has something that leaves you scratcing your head but the lenses are just the very best there are. Even those great folks at Blad went running to Fuji when they made the H series and realised they needed to up their game in the lens department.

I hope you do get to have your cake and eat it, always nice when that happens.

Oh so true, and so good that in here we can disagree without slinging mud over each other...

I suspect that is what all cameras are!

I do like the Fuji, hence the delight when it arrived... as I said though it's not such a carefree option as 35mm for me - though maybe that is a consequence of not using it enough!

I hope you do get to have your cake and eat it, always nice when that happens.

Looks like I have... I need another £60 in sales on Ebay and I can afford both

Well I've done my bit apparently. I just bought a Weston light meter of bay-e and now discover that its one of yours. When I looked at the list of stuff you're selling I didn't see them until I looked again last night.
Anyway money sent last night so where's my meter? :D

Andy

Ah - well you should have said! Never took you for a Janet...

You are aware the meter you won was a Cine meter?

It's still OK as a film meter... but you do have to do a wee conversion. If you are not sure Andy I can cancel the sale?

Erm no..... have I just made a pillock of myself again or are you goading the apprentice?:thinking:

I'm beginning to think that this Olde Wordle Pub serves very strong ale.

Andy

.

No its ok, nothing ventured nothing gained I say. I can always re-list it if necessary.

***No, this one is the all-singing-all-dancing top line best ever 35mm SLR ever made... imo***

You mean sorta like a DSLR that the boys use ;)

Yeah - something like that - but with soul :D

And so boys and girls, I can confirm that the D9 is winging it's way to Chez Arthur, and happily I can also say that the GS will be remaining in the bag to make a very nice pair of film cameras to go out with :D

Incidentally, just fitted the Taron wide converter to the GS... perfect - and with only a 49mm filter thread size at the pointy end of the Fuji lens I should get GS645W-sized frames with no vignetting

Tele converter fits too

Arthur

PS - now I have to dream about a 9ti

Stella or Skol?

Bleurgh!

I have to say though that local club had directors in a while - I had forgotten how easy it was to drink... it all came back to me the next day mind :gag:

I've been out to a local music festival all weekend, I'm just totally Becks'd out!

Finally dragged myself off to bed at 4 this morning, I just know I am getting too old for this malarkey! ;0

well till the next one anyway.

35mm v 645...

they're both the same daft shape :D

35mm v 645...

they're both the same daft shape :D

Actually Joxer, it took me quite some time to figure this out.:D I am really wondering what made me buy a 645. The only advantage possibly is 645 can be blown up much larger without any degradation, but since I dont do that, I dont have any reason to use 645.

square at least demands a different composition mindset; and its fun in a different way

I'm not that serious about the shape:)
You can't beat the size increase over 35mm, but...I dunno, 645 seems half arsed.
On the other hand, the World isn't exactly teaming with metered M/F rangefinders, you have to take what exists.
