I've just reread a thread under a similar title that YV started for 2008!

This is what I wrote in that thread!

Like many here 2008 is the year that I got the Photography bug.

Mate lent me a Nikon D100 for the Farnborough Airshow, 2 months later a D300 appeared !! I now have the BUG big time!!

Luckily I also found this forum which has been superb for simply reading up on basics getting ideas for pics etc etc.

I haven't got out much this year as have had to too much going on elsewhere like getting Married, busy with work etc etc! Which is a pity :(

However I'm going to give myself a pat on the back as ;

1. I now have a website (ok quality of pics up for debate)
2. 'Manual' now doesn't scare me on my D700
3. I have got into the Lloyds of London Art Group and entered an exhibition where I sold 2 Canvases! http://www.lloydsartgroup.co.uk/
4. Finally found out I mainly like photographing people and Landscapes and i'm going to stick to that. Previously I was just buying lenses to cover all bases like Macro Lenses! The Fool!

Think that's it!

Goals for 2010

1. Improve website mainly from the excellent feedback I got from you guys who took the time to feedback!
2. Get a paid gig doing something even if it's just a portrait session
3. Improve!!!!! Improve!!!!! Improve
4. Hopefully with a smidgen of my Bonus come April own a Nikon 200m F2! (Helps not having a wedding to pay for lol)
5. Do a course - quite fancy one of Lovegrove's Urban Day's out - looks awesome.
6. Bloody learn CS4

So what did you guys achieve in 2009 and where do you want to be with your Photography in 2010?

I think 2009 has been a decent year for me photographically. It's not been a fantastic year but hopefully the start of much better things to come.

* 12 months ago I had a D70 and 2 sigma lenses. I now have 2 D300's, 3 decent lenses and 2 Nikon flashes so my kit has definately improved.

* I joined my local camera club last year and this year I was voted on to the committee as treasurer. I have made some good friends there and have a wealth of experience to call on for help and advice.

* I've shot my first 3 weddings this year which was something I'd have never even considered this time last year. I now have 6 more bookings for the coming months and I've been praised by everyone that's asked me to take a photo for them this year.

* I've sold my first print this year. It was very satisfying knowing that my work was good enough for someone to actually ask me for a print for it to hang on their wall for the next few years.

* I've developed my website to a point where I am reasonably happy with it to do the job it needs to do but one of my main goal for 2010 is to get a totally revamped custom made website.

The downside to 2009 for me is the fact that I have found myself taking less and less photos just for the fun of it. I find myself taking photos for a specific reason whether it's a wedding, for a competition or a friends party/event. I have a baby due in April 2010 so I'm hoping this will give me the chance to get back to just picking the camera up to take some happy snaps just for the memories. With 2 D300's in the camera bag my compact never gets used any more. That's not a bad thing but I would like to do a lot more point and shoot photography in 2010.

Well for me, I started photography. My one goal is to keep improving, A Level art is a brilliant platform, and then proceeding to do an Art Foundation Degree course next year will hopefully get me on to a Photography course in Nottingham Trent Uni in 2011.

2009:
- Got my first DSLR camera and learned exposure.
- Had a picture shortlisted for a competition in a magazine (didn't win though!)
- Did some pictures for a friend's band which they like, and will use some for promo.
- Enjoyed it!

2010:
- Keep going, keep enjoying it!
- Improve...
- Build up a bit of a portfolio, perhaps work out what I like shooting best
- Do a photo a day thing to keep my mind on my pictures

Good topic this...:)

2009.
I joined TP.
I think I improved with my pics, inparticular my motorsport ones - thanks to C+C on here and heads up on where to shoot from etc.

I made major improvements to my gear to, which has opened up other oppotunitys, no doubt.

2010
Get to many more motorsport events and keep trying to up the game - especially with regard to composition.
Not to spend a single penny more on gear............................
I have a big trip abroad coming up in April, and would like to be bringing back some 'good' travel images.
Sort out my portfolio - with a view to being more critical about it.
Sort a web site out
Keep learning, keep enjoying.

'09

- got a dslr,
- won a few club comps (including last nights )
- got a 300mm lens for nout,
- meeting for a booking for a wedding next year (friend)

'10

- get more lights
- shoot alongside some pros (weddings, portraits, etc) (hint, hint !!!)
- get an image published in a media area
- get an image entered into an exhibition
- shoot the wedding with fantastic results
- work towards a c.p.a.g.b.
- move from togging as just a hobbie to a hobbie and a part time job either as solo or employed (hint, hint !!!)

'11

- world domination, mwooo ha ha haaaa

Was just thinking about this very subject earlier today.

This time last year I set myself the following goals for 2009:

- Sell a print to a member of the public via my website
- Get an image published in a magazine
- Get an image in the Take a View 2009 book

I managed to achieve all three which I am delighted with.

Still thinking about what to aim for in 2010

09: Business has gone up 300%
Nearly crushed under work load.
Web site went live in March.
New lab Dunns doing a great job.

10: New offices in Jan
New sales person/New office person and anew photographer for Easter.
Business to grow double last year.
Update website with new products and digital download facility.(That will cut down our overheads on printing a bit)

More conferences and fayres to gain more business leads.

Look at end of 2010 to see if getting own mini lab is viable.

09 - doing domestic coverage

10 - doing global coverage (well, maybe, or perhaps that will be in '11)

Things I have learnt - nothing is impossible with the determination to suceed and support from your friends.

2009:
- Got first dSLR in June
- Discovered my knack of abstract macro stuff
- Got published (and paid) in December
- Found loads of forums with helpful, friendly, like minded folk
- Found a few forums full of kit snobs and cliques, promptly left those

2010:
- Join local contemporary arts group
- Explore landscape photography
- Exhibition??
- Possible switch to Canon, not sure yet

I'm not chasing anything nor making any real plans TBH, just going with the flow and see where this journey takes me.

Carl

2009:
- Shot 2 weddings- man that was scary
- Bought my first full frame digital camera
- Started uploading pictures to istock

2010:
- Hope to buy 24-105mm F4
- Be a wedding assistant for a year (shout if you need one!)
- Sell 150 images on istock.
- Start to change careers....

2009 was my breakthrough year. I bought a Canon EOS 450D fifteen months or so ago and I've spent the time since taking loads of pictures and gradually exploring the camera's many features. Hopefully, I'm slowly getting better at it.

2010 is the year I'm looking forward further exploring the beast.

2009-
Learnt how to use 40d
Upgraded from 40d to 7d
Shot loads of Motorsport
Realised I want a career in photography

2010-
Learn how to use 7d
Get motorsport picture published (may have already ticked this box just waiting to hear about it!)
Get into a paid photography job either self employed or through something else
Spend loads on new gear, it's an addiction I can't help it

2009 has been my best year to date :D

I started the year not really understanding the best settings for my gear and producing rubbish, to being in the position that i will now be shooting for a sports agency in the new year :woot:

Goals for 2010

Get shots published in the Nationals at least once before the end of the Football Season.

Cover BSB and Touring Cars

Cover England in the summer ODI's and tests

Nice thread
Been boring everyone in the office with something similar to this. Had a bit of a relapse on the photo front since I changed jobs in August. Changing jobs also halted my Lloyds Arts club plans too (by the way congratulations on that - it's an exclusive group) I really haven't had anywhere near as much time as I used to but.....

2009

  • Managed to enter all except one round of POTY as intended. My photos and techniquehave improved massively just because of this.
  • Not only have I entered POTY each month, I've actually done much better than I expected so a huge confidence boost was begotten from that too.
  • Like a lot of people, the website was overhauled completely. Still needs work but it's better than it was.
  • I got published in a couple of the local newspapers (no fees but it's good to see your name in bold type next to a news story)
  • Been appointed official team tog for all the Sunday league games for my son's under 11 mob - Been interesting and a steep learning curve, especially in the rain with poop light.
2010

  • Get out more and take some of the pictures that have been in my head for most of this year
  • Get more published
  • Get paid for published work
  • Save up for some quality glass - The Tammy 70-300 is stretched to it's limits these days.
  • Save more and upgrade to a 7D (might have to sell the kids first)
  • Enter POTY Every month and aim to finish better than this year
  • Most important on for 2010 - continue to enjoy taking pictures

2009
Realised I wanna do this for a living
Learned a lot about light and the massive value of always having a flashgun or two and triggers in the bag
Assisted paid and unpaid
shooting for myself paid
applyied for a paid part time tog job (waiting on news)

2010
get paid more
start building up backup kit
build my processing rig
work more on my own
assist more
press accreditation through expose ..... maybe
actually build my site

2009
Survived a major emergency operation in January, took 5 months to recover and spent the rest of year taking photos rather than High Tech Business Development contracting - not fun looking for work in a recession. Sold some fine art prints and made some money out of weddings, proms and commercial commissions. Moved from Canon to Nikon.

2010
Go back to my old job as there is not much money in photography compared to what I was doing and the fun is going out of it a bit.
Use the new Nikon for fun and fine art photography.

I take it your not in Lloyds anymore then ?! I'm sure you could still join the Art Group?

I just thought of another goal - I'm going to try and enter every round of the Comp on this forum.

Hey Gordon? a bit of a negative there on the thread. There is shed loads of cash to be made in photography.

Why do you sound so down about it????

Ok so I've been in the industry 20+ years. the last 2 went solo. First year filled with freelance work 2nd year full on no freelance work. This year has put us over the VAT thresh hold.... down side is more bloody paperwork....

Opps.. does sound a bit negative doesn't it. Just meant that I earned good money doing other things and can't see me achieving it in photography. Doing it for money is spoiling my enjoyment a bit...

It's funny a lot of folk on here say the same thing. 'Went pro lost the enjoyment!'

I can't think of anything I'd rather do except fly of course.

I just love photography. I've done allsorts in the world of photography but I've never lost the enjoyment. If I was not as busy as hell I would not enjoy it. I like it to be full on with deadlines..... otherwise I'd would be like a HND college student spending a month on getting one print right!!!!! Nightmare that would be.....

Making a living from Photography is like being paid for your hobby.

Not many people today can say they enjoy their work..... to many people do a job to to pay the mortgage and bills and not doing the job they would really like to do.

That should poke the Bear!!!!!!

Glad to hear you are ok Gordon.

I take it your not in Lloyds anymore then ?! I'm sure you could still join the Art Group?

Nope - The joys of the 9th floor are behind me now (btw, check your pm's - I never knew you were you till today :bang:, in fact, I didn't even know you had a camera till today ). Not really got much to do with the industry anymore either, though I might be back at your place in the new year for a bit of consulting on the workflow stuff.

To be honest not sure much of my work would have been up to scratch for the Art Club, but Jamie kept on at me to give it a go.

So as not to hijack this thread I am also adding some more goals for 2010.

  • Learn how to best use the new Mac
  • Sort out my processing workflow
  • Re-Organise all my external drives so all my photos are tagged and organised (this, I suspect will take all year).

Its an expensive hobby though, so print sales will help ;)

Well I have not achived a lot in 2009 due to only getting my DSLR half way through September. But I have leant a little bit about shutter speed and apeture and because of buying the latest Parctical Photographer I have learnt what the scale thing is it is the exposure bar. My goals for next year are to just keep on improving and learn more things and find some new places to go and not to be scared of trying new things.

Had a few EPIC trips up north, and completely fell in love with Landscape Photography
Shot my first two or three weddings
Opened the new studio and shop!

On the flip side, me and wife were trying for baby, and we suffered a miscarriage around the same time the shop opened. It helped put lots of things in perspective for us, and we are both OK and coped well. Claire is super strong, and I can cope with more or less anything if I am busy.

2010 goals:
Have a wee baby with Claire
Ensure that my shop survives and prospers
Get a framing company off the ground
Try and open a second shop close by, not photography focused
Sell 5 landscape prints per week
Get on at LEAST 4 epic trips to the highlands, islands and surrounding areas, with a view to really increasing my portfolio
Hopefully find the time to get back on the crit panel here!!

Gary.

I didn't have any achievements for last year. Only took up photography last june. Impressed with everyone elses so far!

Here's my breakdown.
2009
Bought my first camera D60 and fell in love with photography and upgraded to a D300 (this week)
Been pretty pleased with my level of learning so far.
Got published in 1 magazine from a protest I shot. Didn't make money out of it though, photo was kindof nicked off my flickr for a magazine . Being green behind the ears I let them have it for free, but got recognition.

2010
Get paid for at least 1 photography job (real ambition, get paid for lots of jobs!)
Get another photo published (not just from being nicked)
Start a website
Look into stock photography

I think that's enough for now!

2009
Continued lots of learning
New website
Got enough new work to support goals achievment 1 in 2010

2010

Full time photographer from 1st March  well pleased with that one, but I think making that change work will be enough to think about

Hugh
