What diameter is a fat ball ? O.k a bit of a strange question ! The birds in my garden at the moment are getting rid of a fat block every two days, In comparison I've never seen any bird on my Peanut feeder so I wondered If I brought fat balls will they drop into the peanut feeder ?

Thanks all

Presuming it's the mesh type peanut feeder? Fat balls are usually around 1.5 inches across, at their widest and should just drop straight in. You will get a small amount left at the bottom of a peanut feeder, that the birds can't reach.

You can buy pre filled fat ball feeders at the likes of B+M.

About 1% of the length of a piece of string...

Looking at ours, they vary between about 30mm to 60mm depending on brand and size (one pack is marked "large").

FWIW, the birds here much prefer the Wilko blocks to any of the balls we've tried them on.

Great I've got some pieces of string lying about I'll check them out !

Thanks everyone for replies to what was a strange question ,I think my best bet looking at you replies is to just order a new feeder and some fat balls. I cannot drive at the moment ( injury) so I've been restricted to my village ( it's a very nice village so not a real problem) and live well out in the sticks.

I can't help with the sizes, but others have covered that. Things might be different in your garden but my experience is similar to Nod's. The birds love the square fat cakes but pretty much ignored the fat balls.

I've taken down a three quavers ate square fat cake put a new one in and placed the 1/4 cake flat on the small bird table ( flower pot tray) their going made for it ! the bigger birds that struggled a bit on the hanging feeder are giving it a right hammering . Funnily enough I have another fat feeder ( pine cone socked it fat) and they have never touched it !

We had a spotted woodpecker on our fat block a few days ago. He/she is probably a regular visitor but not often seen by us. Assorted tits and finches also love them.

Starlings, Blackbird,Sparrows living in our roof and in a hedge about 50 foot away, Blue/Great Tits ,Dunock , bloody Pigeons( if I put seed out ) Collared Doves. Jack doors and Robins. We once had a Sparrow Hawk eating a Pigeon sitting infront of our kitchen window, we see him regularly ,normally notice him as the Pigeons scatter . Over head we see Buzzards,Kestrels and just lately a Red Kite seems to have moved in normally being pestered by the local Crows. I'm not a Birder/Twitcher but I do like to see the birds and enjoy spotting new ones.

You can squash them and drop the bits in.
