Yes
As above really. Is it simply a white umbrella or does it need to be a specific material?

I dont want to spend the earth on this but would prefer an umbrella I can shoot through rather than a reflector.

Thanks for helping:bonk:

It's just an umbrella through which the light passes, not one from which the light reflects.

yea that sounds right but how do you know
would this one do the job even though it says translucent-Diffuser-reflector

Hmm, it doesn't really specify, does it, despite stating 'translucent.'

A lot of shoot through types come with a black backing which is removable meaning you can then use them as shoot through or reflective - make sure it's big enough as well, as 33" is pretty small for an umbrella.

OK to stop me banging my head against the wall any more...anyone got a link to a good 'starter' umbrella?

Don't want to spend a lot but would be good I guess to have one which can reflect or shoot through.

i was looking at this one too but if 33" is a bit small, what is the best size to get for portrait? or is it the bigger the better?

The one you linked to looks good to me at a decent price; good enough for head and shoulders or half-length portraits - the size in inches when referring to umbrellas is measured across the circumference, not the diameter when opened as you would think.

There are two types of umbrella the one with just one covering of white materiel and the other has two covers the second one being black this is on the top so the light will bounce from the inside.
I tend to like the bounce type I think you can aim it better so have more control of where your light will go, as for the shoot through; your light will flood the room more.
Hope this helps

??? The circumference is the circle (ie O) and if you measure across it, you are measuring the diameter are you not?

Ok, measured around (not across) the circumference, and not across the diameter... jeez... :cuckoo:

do you think you can you take the black off this one to then use as a shoot through?

or is it a perm bounce?

It states in the item title:

1. Translucent Diffuser
2. Reflector (Silver)

So you should be able to remove the black/silver part to be able to use hte 'Transclucent Diffuser.'

I have a 150cm shoot through/reflector umbrella I could sell as I never use it, although I need to find/buy another tube to fit the thing in to post it.
