what colour background do you use if on location at a black-tie dinner dance???? (can't use black as I know full well that most of the evening wear will be black, and can't use white, as that always needs touchups to get rid of the kinks and areas that aren't as white as the rest...and have to be able to print copies there and then without post touchups!)....what colour?!?!

Bumping this cos I'd like to know as well. I've got a black tie do in May and was wondering

Mid grey is good.

it's good because it's both neutral and unobtrusive and because it can be lit evenly if required to make it lighter, or lit unevenly to make it more interesting.

Having uneven lighting is a big advantage because it adds apparent depth to the photo, unlike black or white which compesses distance and makes the shot look 2-dimensional

i had thought of one of those mottled backgrounds, but thought maybe they were a bit too '90s and old fashioned....second choice was a very pale brown/yellow (almost like a wall in Venice lol) mottled muslin which would accentuate skintones due to it's sunny lightness, etc.... grey sounds good, but would definitely have to do it with some strong light variation to give nice depth & shadows, as otherwise will look a bit flat and boring.

perhaps the room as the background, black tie events normally in somewhere quite nice, so they should have some flat plain walls?

hmmm, yea can see myself going with a few backup plans...grey or just the actual setting itself. just posted a thread also on if anybody's used the lastolite hi-lite, maybe a possibility as i've been wanting to get one for ages, and with all the events i do on location, it seems like a good option maybe.

yea i've got a great portable stand which fits into an itey bitey bag and i can dismantle it in 30seconds (lol)!

The trouble is for me, I'm one of the guests as well! So I will be in ballgown and have my camera!

White but shine coloured light/s on it?
