Yes
OK, here is a picture that needs rescuing.

IMG_9341resized_for_editing_.jpg

I am a total beginner when it comes to processing, and very rarely do anything more than the basics, and while I do have Elements 5, I normally use ACDSee 8.
So, can any of you clever people with Photoshop show me, and explain to me, what to do to rescue it - the bottle was in a room that had had a fire in it, so the plastic melted - sadly, the light from the small window didn't allow me (nor did my skills) to adjust the light or position of the bottle, and the top of the neck is lost into the background. The mood needs to be dark and sombre please..!
Thanks!

OK, So what did you do to it ?
I can get a similar result though without being able to lighten up the mouth of the bottle so well, or at least if I do, the faces on the label seem to wash out..
(and thanks as well !)

i think he did that using the shadow and highlight function in PS. It is very good at retaining detail an brightening up dark areas. O yes and sorry if i am wrong i am a PS noob lol

be more productive with a nice big fat juicy raw.
this is the best I could do without getting loads of moire rainbows/noise/fartyfacts

Tweaked shadows and highlights, contrast boost, cropped and sharpened.

Hi Steve, I also had a go...I didnt know if you wanted the colours leaving in - but you said dark and sombre, and so I tried it as a Black and White

as far as for what I did - here is a detailed explanation :)

levels
5, 1.56, 211

Contrast
100%

Gradient Map
90% Opacity

Diffuse Glow
grainyness 0
glow amount 2
clear amount 15

sharpened
42%, radius 1.5%

cropped

add white border at 0.05cm all around
add black bored at 0.5cm all around

Made a copy layer and inverted it, then changes the blend to colour added vignetting and made a new layer for the frame which I blurred a little and that's it really. Then gave the whole image a blur at about 30%. Hope you like.

Thank you all for taking the time to help me out with this - much appreciated !
It is amazing how different people see or interpret an image - I think that Alby got closest to what I had wanted to see but couldn't do, however, he is speaking some foreign language when he explains what he did.
Del wins for clearest-but-complex explanation, as some of hers went over my head as well.
fabdacab and Duckydoodle win with clearest explanation, Davenjulie with best background and shortest explanation, Jumbobeef for having the only post with both pictures in it, but rasmusrok1 is looser for not even posting a picture....(that said, I have not posted my best effort, have I...!)
By way of conclusion, one of you needs to donate a copy of photoshop and a very big idiots guide to using it, as well as coming out and teaching me in a slow clear and patent way, free of charge.

LOL Steve

Ah yes, I didn't say what I did, first of all I extended the foreground of the photo, to have the bottle a little further away, cropped it, I then change the contrast, and levels, blurred the background, flash fill action, colour popper, vignetted and finally framed it.

I then uploaded it to the internet, replied to your post, went out took some photos, came back read this post, got my hand slapped, so I replied to this post, just now,

Hows that

Dave  :D

Fantastic Dave - no slapping from me though, promise..!
Thanks again to all - its the first time I have seen one of my pictures beingplayed with by others, many of whom are clearly more expert than me..!

There you go. We can all try and work it out now.

Madam Dellipher - As you know, thats not too hard to achieve...

Gerods - another thing I could never do..

Now you are just rubbing in the fact of womens superiority.(and I am a soft southerner just to make it worse..)

Well, I am not in a position to donate a copy but I am quite happy to come out and give you a lesson, especially if it is foc to me :D

How about some lessons (well, sort of I am not exactly a teacher and learn most things by pressing buttons to see what they do) in part-exchange for certain building work ?
