Yes
Am thinking of getting one of the mirrorless systems, for street photography and general walking about.I have 5D 2 and a 1d iii but want a smaller camera as I think either of them is a bit big for street etc .Plus just for days out I don't wanna be humping a large body about.Looked at EOS M,fuji and the Olympus pens but my head is in a spin and not sure about not having a viewfinder.
all comments welcome thanks in advance .

I've just been using my mates Fuji XT1 and I'm sold! Just got to work out how to fund it, sad thing is if nikon did a range of fast dx primes I'd probably stick with my D7100.

As you have Canon gear anyway I would think hard about the EOS-M. It has a full crop sensor from the 650D and you can buy the 22mm f2 for under £100 new on Ebay. Presently under £200 at Argos and comes with a pretty good kit lens and flash. Aso with a cheap adapter you can use all your current Canon lenses.

There is a thread about it on this forum.

Your 5D would be fine. Add a small prime (the 40mm STM would be ideal) and you're set. Your body language and confidence matter far more than what camera you're using. If you absolutely have to go small, I'd pick a Ricoh GR, but the focal length may be a bit too wide. Very pocketable though, it's pretty much perfect if you gel with 28mm. The X100T should be a consideration too.

It's a slippery slope. Buy a CSC to use alongside a DSLR and at some point you realise that the DSLR just isn't getting used and then after another while it all gets sold and you never go back.

Nothing slippery about that - I gained over a grand and am enjoying photography just as much and taking my camera out a lot more with me....

I cant seem to get on with cameras without an viewfinder, you may be able to.

Camera i would look at are the Fuji range XE-1/2 Panasonic GX-7 and Olympus EM-1 /5 and the OM-10 :)

Although I'm not a street photographer, I have thought that the wifi controls on a couple of my cameras would lend themselves very well to the discipline - having a suitable shelf about a foot above my belly button, careful adjustment of the strap would give a chest level PoV for the camera which could them be viewed and fired from a phone or tablet in the hand. The 2 cameras I have that would be suitable are the X-30 and X-T1 but other WiFi controlled models are available from other manufacturers.

id imagine that there would be too much lag to use a phone over wifi as a viewfinder for shooting street where any delay could mean loosing the shot

Nod I use a similar technique, a little less high tech though, a cable release in my pocket.
First used with a Voigtlander VitoB in the early seventies.
Lately with Fuji X10/X20, which are my cameras of choice for street photography.

TIP when using a cable release on modern cameras slip a piece of plastic tube taken from an atomizer/aerosol take up pipe over the operating wire at the button push end to govern the stroke of the release, too much travel and it may damage the camera shutter release. I speak from personal experience of this happening with an X10.

Rhodese.

CSCs are overpriced and not as good as they're cracked up to be by the fanboys.

Get an entry level DSLR and a small prime (e.g. Canon 100D and 24mm pancake), or a decent compact with a viewfinder.

There are quite a few people here who have CSC's that'd kick your puny Canon 100D to death for ultimate image quality :D As for a compacts you're deeeemin :D

Horses for courses though and on screen at low to mid ISO's who's going to know? Gotta be careful with compacts though as I'd imagine that quite a few would be too slow to meter and focus for grab shots.

Loving this idea of a camera secreted under a mac and linked to wi-fi or a cable release ... please don't do this in my area, I want my locals to keep thinking of photography as 'normal' ... for me 'street' means the D4 and 24-120 or 70-200 :D

That would depend on the lens. ;)

I found the Fuji X10 too slow. I'd suggest that for street type shooting handling and focus speed/accuracy are more important than 'ultimate image quality'. Printed at A4 or smaller (or on screen as you say) all cameras make pics that are pretty much indistinguishable anyway. - even at higher ISOs.
I'm not going to bite......

Go on! :D

I took the comment of the previous poster to be regarding image quality.

As for lens v camera... it has to be a joint effort surely? It's links in a chain really isn't it? Put the worlds best sensor behind a milk bottle bottom and you'll have a lovely high dynamic and low noise fuzzy image :D Put the worlds best lens on a Canon and you'll get a low dynamic range noisy mush :D

Only kidding Canon boys :D

Been to a couple of recent talks from street photographers who swear by the 4/3rds fuji's

I bought a used omd em5 and a selection of primes for street photography which all fit in a little bag. I like the em5 but i needed a grip to make it comfy but one from amazon at £24 seems to do the trick- for 'stealth shots' it has a flip out screen which you can touch to focus and shoot so can be used like a waist level finder. Quality seems fine to me - im happy with it
