What and how to spotlight on objects

After a little advice here please folks. I want to learn more about lighting and how to use effectively. Can someone advise me what is the best may to spotlight small objects for stilllife photos please including Lego ( I know not every ones favourite subject). I have a canon speedLite 430ex which I sometimes use for my macro work albeit not lately.
Is my speedLite the best option or what alternatives do you suggest. how useful would a adjustable focus/ beam maglite be?
Any ideas gratefully received. Including any useful reading matter
 
For small table-top subjects flashguns and regular modifiers can be a bit large - Pringle tube snoots, drinking straw grids and gobos can help. Sometimes a focusing torch is perfect. It depends on the scene and how small the details are.
 
One thing to be careful of with torches is the colour/spectrum, especially with LEDs. Cheap LEDs are not very good for photography and it is worth looking for high CRI (google it) LEDs if you are going down that route

fwiw studio strobes and a selection of modifiers will do everything. A maglite would be useful for light painting but not all that much else.

Thanks for info. I will have a little experiment when I can and digest info given. May look at pringlesnoot seen threads about this before.
