i was very kindly given my very first flash by Leigh (leftcurl) thank-you! :thumbs:

i thought id give it a go because i have a birthday cake i have to take a pic of.

im new to this whole external flash thing, its a Speedlite YN460 BTW.
its working...all the lights come on when u press power :)

i attach it to my camera...yet i cant get it to work?! do i have to have it on a certain setting...my camera is always set on Av.

i went to the menu on my camera (a canon 500D) for external flash and it said option not available as camera flash is not compatible, or switched off.

i have checked online and it says it IS compatible, so what am i doing wrong??!!!

just to be sure, Leigh is a canon user i take it! If not there is a chance it isn't compatible. He may of thought you just wanted to use it off camera??
 
I THINK i may have sorted it

my menu still doesnt work (still says its incompatible) even when the internet says it is! but i have now got it working!! i take it the S1 and S2 options are for slave flashes?? i have no idea though, im totally new to it!

so, ive got it working ON my camera...how do i get it to work OFF my camera LOL
 
S1 and S2 are for slaving to manual or ttl flashes (it won't work as ttl but will not fire off the preflash in ttl mode)

I don't think a yn-460 will work on camera in any mode but manual and then its manual
