What am I doing wrong when...

I've been taking some photographs in the garden recently and sometimes when I press down on the button it doesn't focus and won't take a photo...

Am I too close? I'm usually using auto...

I have a Nikon D3000..

probably too close but really not enough info so just a guess

If you have it set on auto focus then it will only focus and take a picture when you're at the minimum focusing distance. Each lens will have its minimum focusing distance. To get in closer, which is what it sounds like you're trying to do, then the only choice you have is to get back, or get a dedicated macro lens.
