What’s the point of the Telephone Preference Service?

No
I registered my number with the above years ago, yet a few times a week I get calls from companies that tell me I was involved in an accident. If I can get their details I report them on the TPS website.
But I shouldn’t be receiving unsolicited calls anyway!
Does this service actually work for anyone?

Iirc you need to re register periodically, maybe you are not on it anymore?
Just a thought....
Then again I am on it and also get the odd one but no more than 1 or 2 a month...from abroad...

From their website:
The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) is a free service. It is the official central opt out register on which you can record your preference not to receive unsolicited sales or marketing calls
The calls you describe are not sales or marketing, so the TPS doesn't apply to them.

Before posting this I checked, and yes my number is still registered.

The calls are trying to sell me legal services.
Any ones I've heard of have been offering a free service on a "no win, no fee" service, which is where I think they get round the "selling" part.

Or are they? Most seem to be of foreign origin hiding behind spoofed UK numbers.

Don't bother with the TPS, my phone blocks all unwanted/unknown numbers, hardly ever rings just shows
calls that haven't got through when I bother to check

My phone is a mobile one. Are you referring to a mobile phone or landline? I don’t use a landline.

I think the TPS a bit of a paper tiger. It can only take action against U.K. based calls not this originating in an overseas call centre

Precisely. At its very very best it offshores spam.

And it's not even close to its best. Even if the people calling you had any intention of complying with the law they could simply claim they were not selling anything. Just enquiring after your health following your "accident". They can then pass you on to people who sell you stuff based on your "prior business relationship".

A bit like chuggers in town - they can ask you to sign a DD because that's not asking for money which would need a license.

I do find it a good way of getting rid of persistent sales calls at work (e.g. recruitment agencies)...a.k.a.

no I am not interested in working with your office 25 miles away,we work with three based within 5 miles and are happy with the service and contract terms,

can I call you next month to see if you have any requirements,

no please don’t, we are not interested.

Ok I will call in 6 six weeks.

Did you know this number is on the TPS and your current call is illegal? What is your full name for my report to TPS?

Thanks for your time, goodbye...

We no longer use a landline, but had the BT call screening system before. It was just about perfect. I store all the contacts I might want to speak with on my cellphone and ignore any unknown calls. If it's someone I don't know, but legit, they can leave a message.

I get a fair few “ you’ve been involved in an accident” calls on my mobile lately, seems to have replaced PPI calls as spam of choice. If you block the number, they just use another one next time. The TPS can only deal with numbers they know, presumably. I just hang up as soon as they start their spiel anyway.

"It was no accident. They kept phoning me so I tracked them down and gave them a telephone enema."
