I have seen a couple of previous threads regarding the Weston Beach Race (2013) and was wondering if anyone could tell how the place is for parking. It seems that quite a bit of the town near the race itself is cordoned off to enable residents to park which is fair enough to me, but there is not much information on any parking facilities for the event - or is it arrive early and take your chance in the town? I would be grateful for any steers from those who may have been before or are local to the event. I am ok with gear and all that (will assume that it will rain) and intend to start out very early in the morning - it is always a bit more nervy if you don't quite know what to expect on arrival.

Thanks

Chris

Last time we went up, there was plenty of parking on the beach. NOT cheap though. In the past, we've driven in until it was obvious there were no more spaces, turned round and grabbed the first space we saw! Lest us with about a mile to walk back to the event entrance but meant we were able to escape relatively easily.

You say you're OK with gear but remember that it will (in all probability) not only be raining but also, the air will be full of salt water wetted sand and salty spray, so an underwater camera is probably a better bet than a weather resistant set up.

IMO, the things to try to capture are the massed start (if it still happens), the queues at the bases of the hills (after a couple of laps, they get very rutted and the inevitable fallers/stallers hold up proceedings), the quick boys taking the hills as jumps (before the ruts develop!) and the sand encrusted riders coming into the pits. Other advice would be to either take a couple of flasks of coffee and some sarnies or to grab any opportunity to grab a drink/snack when the queue isn't too long! Oh, and leave a set of dry clothes in the car - pretty sure you'll need them.

Nod, thanks for your reply, sorry about my late response but as there were no responses before the race I did not revisit the thread. I do a lot of motorsports so we have the same plan for gear and keeping comfortable - I did wonder about the queues . As it happened, I was due to take photos of a rider who regularly gets into the top 100 but his sponsor pulled the plug a couple of days before and he was without a bike; but not out of pocket with the fees fortunately. As the main race was late-ish on Sunday I decided to give it a miss. I shall keep you advice in mind for next year. Again, thanks for replying, it is much appreciated. Chris

Not a problem, always happy to help when I can.
