Independent Photography Group
Meetings in East Birmingham

I would like to set up a group like the ones below, here in Birmingham, I can hire a venue at Mirfield Further Education College in Lea Village, on a Monday evening.

This would be ideal for anyone from the Birmingham area who looks at or posts within Talk Photography.

IPSE in the south east

Independent photography in Scotland

James, I would consider.... can you tell me some more about it please?

Dear Deb

Thanks for the question it's going to be useful to me to concentrate on what some more information might mean.

This is a new venture for me, I've been a subscriber to Inscape Magazine for many years, the magazine is devoted to the personal photographic work of its readership. Inscape came out of the personal/independent photographic course of action advocated by Paul Hill and John Blakemore in the 1980's through their workshop's at the Photographers Place in Derbyshire.

These workshops began by asking, make two piles of your photographic work (you can do this in your head) in one that which you did to impress in the other that which you did for yourself, and then make a choice.

The choice of personal work leads to a choice of subject and bodies of work being created sometimes over many months even years.

Several people from the south east of the country found themselves at one of the workshops and decided to form Independent Photography in the South East. (IPSE) A similar group exists in Scotand.

Deciding to start on this independent road takes a photographer away from mainstream photography into the unknown. One can have the support of Inscape and these forums but meetings would fill a need for contact, seeing work in the raw and the human interaction that can spark a revelatory insight. Not to put too finer point on it, we the members wil give each other, the oomph to gerron wiv it!

As for the meetings the agenda would be set by the members, but I hope it would adhere to the principles of IPSE and remain true to the ideals of Independent Photography.

And I hope that goes someway to providing an answer, its difficult to condense an explanation without it reading disjointed and I apologise for that.

James
