...OMG

Wow what can I say except it was probably the most nerve wracking and high pressured thing i've ever done, seriously!!! WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY IS HARD. PERIOD!

To give you a bit of background. I usually shoot sports however when a friend of a friend of mine asked me to shoot her wedding as she and her bride both lacked the money to pay a professional I agreed, but on the stipulation that I were to taker no payment for the job and that they would just buy any prints they liked from my site.

Now by not taking any money I thought this would lower the pressure on my shoulders and enable me to enjoy the big day. Well come the night before the wedding was pooping bricks so to speak:D and on Friday morning on the day of the wedding I was all up for running away and hiding, but as this wouldn't have been the most professional of approaches I got my camera bag together (and my nerves) bit the bullet and set off to the wedding venue.

The wedding was due to take place at 1pm so I arrived at 10.30 am to scout the venue, and also to do the small details shots of the tables, cake, venue etc. To anyone shooting their first wedding I would strongly advise doing this as my nerves soon settled down as I got lost in the photography.

Time soon flew by and before I knew it the guests were soon arriving and my nerves started creeping back inside my belly again:gag: I initially found it hard to approach people I didn't know to take their photo, so I took the option of using the 70-200 to grab some candids. This enabled me to slowly get more comfortable, and also get some great candids.

12.45 came and the first bride arrived. I got some quick shots of her getting out of the car and posing with her Grandad, then waited for the second Bride to arrive.

On to the ceremony and by this point I cannot believe how much I was sweating due to the pressure, and although there was a fair bit of light coming in I was glad i took the option of using a speedlite. In my panic I'd switched to AV mode (I had planned to use Manual) the exposures came out ok, maybe a little dark but i've been able to bump up the exposures in LR as I shot RAW (something every newbie should do )

I shot with two cameras, with 70-200 on one and 35 1.4 on the other. There were times when the 35 wasn't wide enough (on a 1D3) and I wished I'd had my 17-40 on but the pace of the day meant I failed to switch lenses when I would have liked. (in hindsight i'd have rented a 16-35 2.8)

With the ceremony over I was ready for a drink and putting the camera down as the pressure i'd put myself under had been immense, then it dawned on me that was only the beginning of the day and there was still so much more to photograph, and that point was when I realised just how hard this Wedding Photography larky is and why the Pro's charge what they do.

As for the day on the whole though, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Yes it was hard, exhausting, mentally draining, but the thrill you get of getting a good shot is awesome.

Maybe had I second shot for a Pro I'd have been more prepared, but by jumping i with both feet like I did I have to say I learned so much. At times you have to really think on your feet, as things do go wrong and best laid plans do change but when this happened I figured it best not to let people know this was happening and also just to go with it.

An example being when I took the Brides away from the main party to shoot some poses and a hoard of uncles followed me shooting over my shoulder. I just went with it and happened to get some of my best shots when they brides were looking at the other cameras.

Also I'd planned to do the formals at a certain time but when the Brides started calling various members over for their groups I just went with it as both of them were enjoying the moment and after all it was their day, not mine :)

Sorry for the long post, but I hope it'll be some help to anyone thinking of taking on a first wedding with no previous experience.

Glad it went OK for you in the end.

I too learnt the hard way when I was chucked in a the deep end and I came away with the same conclusions as you.... it's frickin' hard work, stressful and you have a greater appreciation as to why Wedding Photographers charge what they do!!!!

It's fair to say that before I did my first solo wedding I had toyed with the idea of going into that aspect of photography, however that single day made my mind up that it wasn't for me.

I've been asked several times to shoot weddings and I've (politely) turned them down..... I work during the week so why would I want to spend my weekends under that much stress too?

Well done! Nerve-wracking is right, but you sound like you did everything right - go with the B+G as it's their day!

Also, well done for NOT changing lenses - the shots you can miss when fiddling with your camerabag can be some of the best of the day - I love Wedding candids, it's my favourite time of the day.

Look forward to seeing some of the pics?

Thanks for the post - yes it is helpful. I'm doing something similar in October. I know its not going to be easy but I'm going to do my best.

Also I'd planned to do the formals at a certain time but when the Brides started calling various members over for their groups I just went with it as both of them were enjoying the moment and after all it was their day, not mine :)
I have to remember this - its a case of balancing what we want to do (to get the shots we know they want) with it being their day.

Though I have had to take a bit of control - I see the bride socially fairly often but I asked her on Fri night to set aside a few hours to meet to talk about what shots they want and she was just saying she'd leave it up to me and they had so much else to sort out and the band had been on the phone etc... I said 'in 10 years time you'll have forgotten what the band played but you'll still have your photos!' so they've agreed to meet me next week.

It sounds like it went well for you and I'm sure the couple will be delighted. Looking forward to seeing some pics.

Ha ha - as a fellow sports shooter I shared many of your experiences when I shot my first wedding. I'm not sure which is best - being under mega pressure to get split-second action at a big football game for 90 mins, or the sustained pressure of being on the go at a wedding for 12-18 hours.

I now only do the small number of weddings I do paired up with another photographer which alleviates the pressure significantly (but it's still there!).

Cheers guys, i'm hoping to have the pics up soon but that's another thing people take for granted when wondering why wedding photographers charge all that money for 'one day's work'......there is so much editing that needs doing it ends up being a week's work just to process the files.

Lynn i'm glad my post is helpful and if you need any other advice from a newbie let me know.

Tobers i'm with you on that one mate. i think i'd prefer the pressure of getting a split second shot, but i'd prefer the wedding money any day :D

I went through exactly the same thing but came out smiling...was a bag of nerves too but have had an offer for another big wedding since then and a few small ones in between....

Ive only just finished editing my first wedding but wanted to make sure everything was right....

Hi I would love to see some of your shots. Just so I can compare how I got on to other people in the same boat :)

Great post. It's nice to read a post that grabs you from the first line and makes you want to read more.

I'm glad you enjoyed the day and it was a success, does it make you want to do any more weddings?

Tony.

Great post…good to hear a positive story! And well done too...very inspiring! I take it you’ll be doing this again??? Sounds like you enjoyed it.

Looking forward to seeing some shots.

Cheers Tony, glad you enjoyed the read :D

I must admit that at the end of the day I was left never wanting to see another camera again. But now having seen the images on my computer i've been left with a proud feeling and one of personal achievement having captured the essence of the day despite me being a nervous wreck haha.

Would I do more weddings? er yes I think I would, and I'd like to think the experience from this one will stand me in good stead and hopefully i'll have a bit more confidence when shooting my next one :)

Good I'm glad you feel a sence of achievement and yes you should be proud of yourself. I honestly don't think I have a big enough pair of peanuts to go and shoot someone's wedding without having being a second shooter a couple of times and I am a pro mma fighter so I would say I had a fair size pair of peanuts lol.

I take my hat off to you.

Tony

Good post Philip, I'm doing one in a few weeks & have been full of nerves about it but am viewing it as an opportunity & an experience

Looking forward to the pics

Great writeup, it really conveyed your sense of fear, exhaustion and exhileration.

Lynn i'm glad my post is helpful and if you need any other advice from a newbie let me know.
Thanks Philip. Its still a couple of months away which feels like ages but isn't really! I'm sure I'll be panicking come October...

Some real great shots in there, seems you have really captured the spirit of the occasion!

I think you've done a great job there, there are some really good shots

I also think you have done a great job for a first wedding. The first dance shot is a cracker for your first attempt too.

Well done that man!

great work philip, the brides will be delighted with them i'm sure.

i'm second shooting for the first time in a couple of weeks and i'm a bit nervous about it already so i can only guess at how your nerves were the morning of the wedding lol.

i really like numbers 21, 24, 25 & 28 but as a whole it's a fantastic set.

you must be proud as punch with them!

Well the B/W shot was me setting up for the first dance shot. I got the flash all set up settings all dialled in to the cam and put the cam away in prep for the first dance.

Come 8.30pm with couple waiting to dance my OCF would not fire so I had to resort to on camera flash :bang:

So I was glad I had this shot in the bag even if it isnt quite the first dance I still like it as a b/w image

Good luck Keith, there will be much less pressure on you as a second i'm sure :)

I am pleased with them as a whole but the perfectionist in me is still picking at quite a few of them :D

Great set - I'm sure the couple are delighted. I'll be very pleased if I can get shots like this on my first attempt!

Hugely impressed ... my first wedding shots were nowhere near that good

(Some would say they still aren't :D)

some great shots you have taken i would be proud of them. I can understand to presure you were under doing this type of event. Im hopefully going along to be a candid photographer with my cousin (wedding photographer) also nervous.

But looking through your pictures there really nice.

Terrific shots. Must have been an incredible experience. The happy couple must be even happier now they've seen what a great job you did.

Hi Phil ..great shots !
Your "experience" brings back vivid memories of my first torture . Pre-wedding nerves, wrong camera settings, fogging due to inside/outside temperature difference (February), no flash allowed in church, family camera flashes causing multiple images etc,.etc.
It was hard and stressful and I swore that it was my first and last.
So I couldn't believe it when I agreed to do it again, in about 3 weeks time, for my niece !
Oh well at least it is in Switzerland and the B&G have some very definite ideas for the group shots.....
Anyhow, I do hope that I get some shots half as good as yours, but I suppose I could always blame altitude sickness, snow blindness, frost bite or something .

John
