Hallo.

Looking for a bit of advice please.

What strength welding glass would be the equivalent of a "Big Stopper " ?

Thanks in advance.

Robert (aka Ian).

I haven't done anything with welding glass filters in ages.. if you search back for the very big thread on welding glass filters you'll find some calculated stop values. I know mine around 12-14 stops, but can't remember the shade value.

Why bother when you can buy reasonable 10 stoppers for around £10, they even come complete with circular screw in thread so you don't have to fabricate something yourself!!!

Thanks for that.

You don't have a link do you, or recommendation?

Thanks in advance.

Camdiox are very good for the price - bought one for my lad to use so he wouldn't keep using my Lee Big Stopper and it's actually more neutral than mine.
Very good filter that's worth the money.

Thanks for that Jules, appreciated.

Lots of people rave about the Xsource 10stopper available from Amazon, or you could look at SRB' s own 10 stopper ( quite strong magenta colour cast, but at this price point most of the 10 stoppers will have a colour cast if some sort, and even more expensive ones do!)

Yes the XCsource filter is far better than the Camdiox/SRB ones.
I really must re-do this comparison:)

To answer the welding glass question though
Shade #8 = 10 stop
Shade #9 = 11.5 stop
Shade #10 = 13 stop

Thanks Steve.

Just ordered a set 2-4-8.

Thanks Steve.

Just ordered a set 2-4-8.

Not sure that's what you are looking for, though they are still useful.
The 2, 4 & 8 are 1, 2 & 3 stops, the ND1000 is the 10 stop, the equivalent to a Big Stopper.
I often combine a 1, 2 or 3 stop with the ND1000 for daylight long exposures, so they are well worth having too.

Here's an example of the 10 stop and 3 stop combined (both from xcsource)

Thanks Steve. I don't anticipate doing a lot of this, so the kit should be OK. For £6.00 anyway :-).

Thanks very much for your help.
