Welcome Matt, nice to have WEX represented here, (tin hat to hand?)

I might even post the odd picture here sometimes!
Plenty of odd photos get posted here! :)

To share feedback, my experience with WEX has been generally positive but recently I wanted a Leica Q2 and searched the 'Used' section on your website ... great several available.
Contacted one of your London branches to buy one and one assistant started to process the sale whilst another said it was spoken for and the customer was coming in to check it out sometime soon!
Went into the Bristol store to buy another one that was shown on the website, only to be told that there was another customer coming in to look at it in a week or so, but I could look back if I was still interested!
Can I just suggest that branches be asked to remove items shown as available for sale if they are keeping it in case someone coming in at some time in the future might be interested in buying it!

It hasn't put me off using WEX but it has dented my confidence.

I had no problem when P/X some gear with Wex, they even offered a decent P/X price for what I was exchanging. Yes i would use them again if I could not find equivilant item elswhere cheaper. At the moment even considering changing in all my Nixon gear for a Panasonic G9 mk2 with them

Welcome Mat. Look forward to seeing your pictures.

I suspect you will get a fairly un-glazed view of what people think of Wex, both good and less good. Hopefully your relationship with TP will benefit both sides. :)

Hey Gramps!

You're right, that doesn't sound good and would be annoying!

I'm working on finding out exactly what happened here. Could you give me a rough time when this was? It looks like we had a bug before where some held items were still showing on the website, but we thought that was fixed too. If you do go in and that was the case they should have helped find you another one and got it there for you to have a look at. I'm following this up with the store team and the web team to try and make sure it doesn't happen again, so any additional details would be great.

If you do find you want something from the used section on the site but want to go and check it out, it's always a good idea to order it and choose the click and collect option. If you do that you can be sure it'll be there and no one will have got in before you. If you then find you don't want it when you have a look at it you can just cancel the order while you're in the store and get the refund.

Hi Matt, this was at the end of February, around 24th for London and within a couple of days Bristol.
I can understand someone doing what you suggest (order and then check it out) and the camera being held for a couple of days but I don't understand it being held in such nebulous circumstances as I encountered.
Anyway it's water under the bridge for me but mentioned as if repeated it's not good for your business. :)

Glad to hear it was nice and easy for you! The trade-in team are always happy to have something new in. They should be at all the Wex roadshow events this year too so you can everything done on the day if you're near one of our stores. I can't post a link to the roadshow dates yet (I've got to post more!) but you can find the link on the left hand side of the homepage on desktop.

Hi Mat.

I have had generally good experiences with WEX.
Bought from you and sold to you. Made use of the 45 days return period a couple of times and think it is a good offering

Ps please let me know on here first if you get a 9+ Fuji 18/2 in for about £200 ;)

Now I feel like I'm going to have to post some!

We're happy to hear everyone's view. It's always good to hear what actual customers are finding and think. I'm sure it will work out great for everyone!

Glad to hear you had a good experience! I know the 45 day return period is popular.

I've asked the team to let me know, they said they'd also let me know when the next unicorn is in too ;) Though seriously if you want to follow for a used product at a set price Camerapricebuster has an option for this and gets the used stock from us (and others).

Welcome Mat, a technical question for you:

Are the Leica batteries - BP-SCL2 that are sold now at around £150, fresh and new or are they batteries from a few years ago that have never been used, - the battery made date is on the battery - first 2 digits week they were made and 3 and 4 digit is the year, followed by VB

Hi Matt,

On 2 occasions now I have sent lenses into Wex for trade in, only to be told a couple of them have moisture inside the rear element and needing repair.

Upon asking for the lenses to be returned no moisture to be found.

Both of these occasions were in the winter and the only thing I can think of is they have been in a cold van overnight and not given the time to warm up.

I hope this is the reason.

Have you any thoughts on this?

I'm not the only customer to have had this happen to them as discussed in a thread on here.

I just tried to look these up but I can't find that we have any SCL2, they don't appear on the site either which likely means we've retired that SKU and don't expect any more of them. Read into that as you will for anyone else's stock of them.

most of the used ones kicking around at up to £75 are from as early as 2014, (most seem to hide the VB number, by accident or otherwise?) - but there are quite a few official Leica sellers advertising "new" ones at £150

The one I have in my Leica is dated week 47 2021, so it must have been replaced - (I bought the camera used)

And I'd like to say that I think it's very brave to Join in here Matt, and I hope you get plenty of positive replies along with the few issues...
I will certainly look more closely at the Wex website when I'm next looking to buy/sell or trade any gear in future and have used you in the past. Just wish you had a store nearer to me down here in Cornwall. Looking forward to seeing your version of odd pictures, might make me post a few of mine...!;)

Hey Terry,

I've asked the trade in team to give me some information about this. I'll come back to you when they've let me know, I just didn't want you to think I was skipping over you.

I've spent thousands with Wex but you're not getting another penny from me.

My gripe is that I asked for a quote for a lens I wanted to sell and you gave me one and then cut it when you received the lens. I look after my gear and the lens was little used, I couldn't see a mark on it and even the box was pristine.

I gather you've done this to other people who were equally baffled and once I learned this my mind was made up. So no. You've had your money, you've browned off a customer who bought from you for years and spent thousands with you and no, I wont deal with you again. There are other dealers, even in this day and age.

@MatWex, from one extreme to another - I've always had positive experiences with WEX and even when things go wrong you have been able to rectify them in a professional way. You've made a very loyal customer out of me and I always come to you first when purchasing used lenses and camera related stuff.

Hello Mat,
I generally buy and sell used gear. Being a gearhead its the cheapest way for me to try new gear while not losing too much money.
In the past I have bought a fair bit of things from wex but more recently your branches are not willing to negotiate on the selling price of used gear.
LCE (where I mostly buy from now) are normally open negotiations and as a result I have built good relationships with a number of their branches.
I am often able to negotiate a good price for me because of this and to me feels like they value the customer loyalty.
I hope Wex would reconsider their "no negotiating used prices" stance.

To be fair to Wex they offer a 12 month warranty and 45 day returns. LCE offer 14-21 day returns depending on the branch and only 6 months warranty.

The biggest issue I have with Wex used gear is the ridiculous and often inaccurate descriptions. I recently bought a "mint 9+" lens from them and spent an hour cleaning the barrel.

As for the descriptions, I challenge anyone to make sense of this example which is currently listed;

Condition 9+

"This lens is mint and free of marks with the exception of light marks to the front optic surround, light wear to the lens mount, light dust and debris throughout the optics, although this will not affect image quality in any way."

It's not mint then is it !!!

Plus of course the standard line which they include on every single lens including 10 + & MO grades lol
"light dust throughout the optics, although this will not affect image quality in any way."

Hey Alan,

I'm sad to hear that. I know the team try to keep to the offer where they can. I know lots of people here have enjoyed the buying experience from the Wex used range, doing that means they have to match those incoming trade ins to how they'd expect the items to be in the used section. We know not everyone will always agree and that's one of the reasons we return anything you're not happy with the final trade in offer for free.

Glad to hear you had a great time! I know things don't work 100% of the time so I'm glad you got a good resolution when it didn't work. I hope you'll keep coming to us first. Is there anything your excitedly waiting for?

Hey! I also love gear, its an expensive habit. We do have a price match promise, so if its cheaper anywhere else at a matching grade we'll match that. Otherwise we try to be lowest on the market, and that leaves us less room to make negotiations. We're also offering longer warranties and returns periods than you'll see at LCE and still willing to match their price.

I am sure you can appreciate used gear will not always be available in all shops to ask for a price match.
For example there is a sigma 500mm f5.6 DN listed on your website that I'm interested in. If this was in LCE (espeically at one of the branches that I deal with regularly), I am pretty sure I could have negotiated at least £50-100 off. I don't need to go LCE with a cheaper find elsewhere to be able to negotiate. that's the difference for me.
With wex its either the asking price or no sale. So I have chosen no sale.

Recently I had a £20 off wex voucher so I did buy a lens with it from your website. basically you need to offer nice discounts or be open to general negotiations on used gear for me to buy from you ;)

I only return items if they are not as described, so 14 days is sufficient for me.

12 months warranty is nice but for me the priority is to be able to negotiate and get better deals.

I think "debris throughout the optics" is a standard line they have on all used lenses. I agree it's not helpful but at the same time the same time I'm guessing they are covering themselves against people who might use the above mentioned 45 days returns as free rentals by simply mentioning dust in the lens. All lenses will have dust in them and if it can't it means you just need a more powerful torch :D

Hello! I'm sorry you ended up with something that needed that much cleaning. It doesn't sound like fun!

That description does not sound mint at all, particularly with the debris. Could you let me know what that is so I can hunt out the offending item and get the team to have a look at the description?

You are right, that line is added to every lens. The trade in team have found that every lens does have some small traces of dust inside them, often including the open box returns, to the point they wanted to mention that on every lens. Those small traces do show up under the lights they use for inspection but not when they're used on a camera. That's why they say it's there, but not visible. If it's bigger or worse they'll note that and that it can be seen too.

Hey Terry,

While I couldn't track down your exact quotes I did speak to the team. We've had reports of similar before and changed the process from back when you made your request. Now all the deliveries are left for a while they hopefully come up to come up to temperature. If when they're inspected they do still show some signs of moisture inside it's difficult to know if it will dissipate or not. The team can only judge these as they find them, but on the basis of the unknown we try and offer the fairest we can which is normally to make an offer at the 9- grade.

I hope that helps!

TBH it happens a lot on your descriptions it isn't a one off, bit of a standing joke among some of the photography community.

As for the light dust line on every lens, come on that's nonsense, no other retailer does it, it's a backside covering exercise but again it's a bit of a standing joke.

No it isn't, light dust is their standard line, debris is larger particles.

Not really Mat.

I was advised that the lenses would need to be repaired and was given a quote for the said repair. Nothing was mentioned about a downgrade to the offered price.

Make of that what you will but to me it appeared to be a money making exercise.

Instead of "changing the process" I'd have thought even with a rough grasp of physics an inspector who is entrusted with getting the inspection right would have realised this.

Don't get me wrong, I've had good experiences as well so this isn't a "knock Wex" post.

Hopefully it's feedback that will improve the service for all.

New Offers

OM System Cashback

Starting today is a great cashback offer from OM System. They're offering up to £450 cashback with a great £350 cashback on the OM-1 Mark II, purchase these from Wex and and you can claim the cashback.

See what's available on the cashback offer.
Ohhh, £350 off the OMD1 Mk2 plus 12-40 pro, I can feel a birthday present coming on at the end of june!
One question though, does anyone know what OM's standard warranty is to help me decide whether or not to bother with the extended warranty or not?

I only had one experience I could not fathom at first.
Sent in a Tamron 2.8 of some type, can’t remember the exact model.
Got the report saying it had a large piece of debris only visible at f8 or higher. Though it odd as I had not noticed anything, ask for it to be sent back.
On getting it, there was a noticeable piece of debris which I had not seen before. It was under the front element and looked like an easy fix. Was going to get the tool for it and decided to give it a bit of a shake, low and behold it disappeared and no more shaking could get it back onto the front element.
Sold it on eBay and never heard anymore about it.

Thanks, I passed that one on the team for them to review. I've passed on your comments about the descriptions too and they'll consider it and how they can improve the descriptions going forwards.

Hey Terry. I realise they didn't offer that to you at the time, that is a portion of the process that was changed later because of feedback like yours.

We're always trying to improve the service for everyone, we want you all to think of Wex first when you're trading in or buying and we can only do that by offering the best service and prices.
