I went out last night to give star trails a go. When i finished i looked at some of the images. Towards the end of the images some of them had these weird lines across them. You can see them gradually appear towards the end of the set, but one image might have the lines, the next image might not but the lines would be back again - so its not consistent. When i got back to the car and took dark pictures in the car, the images were fine.

Any ideas why this has happened? It was very cold but it shouldn't cause this right? This is the worst of them:

It's called banding and can have multiple causes, overheating being one of them. It's also usually more apparent in dark/underexposed images.

Do a quick google on your kit and what you were doing with 'Banding' as the first word.

I didn't really think that it could have been overheating because it was so cold, about 2 degrees. But then again I've never done star trails or had the camera on continuous for so long!

Cheers peeps :D

Multiple 25 second exposures at highish ISO could well cause it.

Exif says the camera was at 22 degrees, earlier images (that were fine) were 18 degrees. A friend who was with me with his 5d mkII, shooting at high iso and long exposures had no issues though?
