My sons football youth team had their annual outing to a football match so I thought I'd have a play with the camera.

This was a fairly typical result :-

They all look weird , as if the players have been pasted onto a false background. Is this caused by the lack of shadows/floodlighting ?

Image hasn't been sharpened & it looks just as weird at full size.

Anybody got any ideas ?

Ps. I don't think that it was Liverpool v Watford that caused the problem ;)

Possibly just too fast a shutter speed? you've frozen the motion completely.

Don't think so  , When I'm doing hand -held long range stuff I use a high shutter to stop 'wobble' which of course doe freeze it solid.

This is a daylight shot using a higher shutter speed but doesn't (to me a least) look anywhere as weird :)

Based on the differances between those two pictures... id say it was an optical illusion caused by the lack of shadows, as you suggested.

DoF would be my guess, not sharp due to motion blur, but the DoF is spot on causing those colours to be less blended than the surroundings (IMHO) :hinking:

Greater dof in the first shot and the lack of shadows is causing that effect I reckon. :)

I can follow the ideas that the others have posted. Can't add any more other than..

Maybe this was how that Jesus bloke got a reputation for walking on water?

Thanks for the comments :). I've gone through them again & the 'worst' of them seems to be when you are expecting shadows on the ground/bodies. The DOF on the majority of them should be over 20m but the shortening effect of the lens could be making them look 'cut out'.

looks more natural with shadows

I'll post a selection of shots tomorrow , if the players look like cardboard cut-outs :help:

Ps. Shooting at ISO 1600 makes things a bit fuzzy :D

PPs. Noiseware kills all the texture in grass :(

To me the fact that neither of the two players are actually in contact with the ground, the third player at the back looks normal as he has contact with the ground.
