Can anyone recommend the best weedkiller? Is the premixed stuff better than the capsules you mix into your watering can etc? Got some nasty weeds that I need to go nuclear on and wondering if I should look at something industrial strength.

Buy some smart price salt and cheap vinegar plus spray bottle

Make a saturated salt/vinegar solution - allow to settle, pour into spray bottle and away you go - cheap as chips!!!

OH - thanks - wasn't aware of using vinegar with salt - thanks for that one:)

I've been using salt dishwasher granules and then waiting for a bit of light rain to provide the moisture necessary - that works quite nicely too :)

I've tried many things over the years & found `Roundup` the best.

You used to be able to buy loads of strong stuff, but much of it is now no longer available.

If you have a large area of weeds, try Jayes fluid. It works wonders on drives & paths too.

Roundup does it for me too, takes around a fortnight to kill the toughest of weeds, thistles etc. If your using a watering can use a old one and mark it weedkiller only. You dont want to feed the plants at a later date with weedkiller residue in the can. Their cheap enough.

SBK..great stuff but wont harm the grass..

Round-Up is the go-to for many professionals but they can get stronger stuff than us mere mortals. Even the diluted stuff we can get is better than most and has the advantage of not leaving the ground unfit for vegetable consumption afterwards! For driveways and paths, pathclear was the stuff but it's been a long time since I used it so can't say how good the modern version is.

Cheers some good ideas there. I was looking at the back at the glyphosate content and was surprised to see b&q's Verve actually had the highest amount so bought two 1L bottles to give it a trial. Also noticed you can buy concentrated glyphosate on Amazon which I'll give a try after trying some of your ideas.

We've got a few weeds that have suddenly come out of nowhere and are like trees. Was going to set the chainsaw on them!

Some good suggestions to try, like @Nod, I've used path clear with success, but can't seem to get it now, so might try the B&Qs stuff. Prefer the sachets (or whatever they come in now) as I've a sprayer I use...

Like cooked meat and life?

No like a eu ban and recall until the last minute.

"Evidence is contradictory and inconclusive" etc.. Used responsibly (don't spray in windy conditions, don't inhale the spray etc.) it's as safe as life. Mainline it and it's a different story. Like most things, there's an element of risk.

And there's the key.
The likes of "Global Justice Now" ( ) have been unable to prove their claims.
So no, it doesn't cause cancer.
It may, but so may lots of things.

I find resolve better than round up if used correctly.

We just use soluble path clear, got its own nice red watering can. Seems to work well.

Doesn't roundup give you cancer?

It is pretty much proven to be so. This doesn't matter at all if you spray your lawn, etc where you don't grow food and obviously don't eat those weeds or grass!!!! I strongly prefer my food without such harmful / carcinogenic pesticides and where possible opt for "organic" produce these days.

What a great logic... They said somoking was safe and even beneficial to health. They said thalidomide was perfectly safe. They said teflon trying pans are good for you. They said diesel smoke does very little harm. They said a lot of things and they were all bull. Just because another fat cat lobbyist and lawyer gang managed to delay a ban it does not prove no causality of cancer. The data in fact strongly suggest otherwise.

Bon apetit.

And if the suggestion of cancer causation becomes proof, they will get their ban, but solid proof is required, not suspicion.
Try to keep up.

Oh, and Thalidomide is still a very good, very widely used drug. It is unsafe only during pregnancy.

Oh wake up. It is proven cigarettes can directly cause cancer yet we are still fighting hard to ban them. I won't hold the breath util Monsanto's crap gets banned because it won't for various bureaucratic reasons buried deep in evil trade deals like the upcoming TTIP. Just as I don't smoke, I make an informed decision to avoid pesticide laden food and frankly the society should not be intentionally denied knowledge of allegations, research data, precise food labelling and an open discussion

Yes, thalidomide has safe uses, but you have to understand it was marketed specifically for pregnant women at the time and the rest is no history. It is just one of many examples where regulatory bodies have failed to protect the public, and a great example that people should exercise caution using novelty pharmaceutical and agrochemical products.

You're a fool if you consider Thalidomide a novelty drug.
Do you see conspiracy in everything? o_O

I've always thought that a good way to ban smoking is to simply increase the legal age to buy and smoke by one year each year. That way you aren't penalising anyone who currently smokes but prevent anyone new coming of age to start smoking (other than doing so illegally).

This way in a generation you will have abolished smoking.

But it will never happen, and nor should it.
The revenue gained from tobacco & cigarette sales far exceeds the funds used in treating smoking related diseases. And that's because the vast majority of smokers actually never develop any smoking related illness. (And before anyone jumps on it, the percentage of non smokers who develop conditions which could, but not necessarily would, be attributed to secondary smoke, is tiny.)
The rabid anti smokers may gnash their teeth at that, but it's true.

It was once a novelty drug like everything else and you are clearly looking for ignorant fools by twisting words in such a pathetic fashion. How long will you keep spouting abuse and hate towards me and try to extinguish any opposing idea? I am frankly sick of this.

You are really the devil's advocate or perhaps a Goldman Sachs or UN employee :)

Cigarette sales are a huge market for the respective companies and they have big lawyers and lobbyists to support the industry for as long as possible. It is also a great revenue for pharma treating various chronic lung diseases and cancers. I've been there and I know exactly how they operate.

Yes, there are other problems, namely high air pollution in urban centres, and yes we need to clean up transport and energy sector. Do not let this detract from completely unnecessary exposure from smoking that is equally as bad and easier to deal with.

More conspiracy theories?
It's always nice to see you when you pop out from behind your cloak of righteous indignation.

Any chance you guys could shake hands and agree that you simply have different opinions on it? I can't see either of you changing your minds! Lol

Back to the windswept and interesting topic of gardening, does anyone know of a corded electrical grass strimmer which uses blades rather than poxy nylon wire? All the ones I can find are either cordless or petrol bushmasters.

I don't know of any electric ones that come near the performance of a good petrol one. Look for one (petrol) with a gearbox at the end of the pole rather than a cable one - gearbox ones will have a sharp (usually cast) bend while cable ones will have a gentle curve.

Since I'm accused of having blood on my hands regarding the recent French killings, I'm sticking with no.

You can't hold a reasonable discussion with someone who emerges from behind his sofa hidey-hole only to express his fear, before retreating to the same safe space.

Guess what: I am always happy to debate and discuss things very openly and without any traces of political correctness. This is in stark contrast with trying to immediately label any opposing or dissenting opinion as a conspiracy theory, and stifling any unwanted debates.

We still have freedom of speech (I hope!!!) and we all need to use it. We deserve a chance to know and also to express our own opinions without a fear of intruding into somebody's unrealistic "safe space". We are also entitled to have religious beliefs and a set of moral values and not be ashamed of our ethnic background for whatever sinister political reason. I am simply compelled to expose and oppose questionable official or regressive narrative.

That's my "go to" weed killer of choice too :)
Its evil stuff, kills everything, total wipeout. No smell, get it on your hands and your in trouble, I live on a farm and I used it once, never again. Unless its a field, get thick gloves and pull the weeks out by hand and dig the roots out, eg Bramble, Ragwort even Nettles. if its Bracken just keep cutting it and it will come less and less. I hate all weedkiller, serious stuff.

May I ask, what weeds have you got?

I've used it in my garden...on my drive.
Still alive.
Raised on a farm.
Still alive.
