Did a wedding (reluctantly) for a friend the other week, all done and dusted, gallery/albums etc., also put together a nice slide-show on a DVD.

I'm intending to put the same slide show on You tube, and provide a link so the bride can embed it on her Facebook page.

While I'm comfortable uploading to You Tube, some queries around the issue.

1. For the DVD audio soundtrack, I used music the B&G supplied (same as at the wedding), now I'm comfortable using it on the DVD, which will be given to the bride, but not sure how I stand copyright wise if I use the same audio sound-track on the slide-show on Youtube?

2. What are the best quality settings to upload to Youtube, is 1080HD OK

3. Will the Youtube slide-show be cross platform, for example will you be able to view it on an Ipad?

4. Any other issues I need to be aware of?

Thanks

I've done this a couple of times. YouTube will scan the music track and if it's got a license to play the music then you are golden. If not I think they will remove it. Not had it happen yet.

There's a mobile option if i remember rightly which you need to click to get a mobile version suitable for the ipad.

The only other thing I can think of is that i usually mark it as unlisted so only people who have the link can see it. I guess you can ask your friend which they prefer.

If you use music you need the appropriate licence irrespective if the B&G gave it to you. Youtube have rules and the PRS monitor some of these. Get the licence and don't risk getting caught as it can be veeeery expensive.

Bit out of my depth here, what is 'the licence' and how much does it cost.

Perhaps it would be easier to omit the soundtrack?

If it's a one-off I would adopt one of those tracks Youtube provide and avoid having to get a licence.

1080 is too high for Youtube 360 would probably enough. If you're doing an MP4 for the couple then 1080p would be best.

Thanks for the above, it's been more than useful

Looking forward to seeing this Les :D

I don't think I will Dave, I'm only a competent, not a good wedding photographer, I've enough experience and skill to produce 200 images that are correctly exposed, composed and in focus, and some good portraits/group shots, which is what I produced at this wedding, and the bride/groom were chuffed with the result.

To be a 'good' wedding photographer you need that special bit of creative magic that you and a few other photographers on TP have, I know I don't.

Why not try some royalty free music, there's quite a lot out there (though I have no URL's to hand I'm afraid) and that'd get around the very contentious issue of copyrighted music on YouTube.

Most royalty free that's worth listening to still requires you to purchase it.

It's no more or less illegal to use the music on YT than on a DVD. But you are much more likely to get caught ;)

For example, I made a slideshow recently to show to a B&G. For what I thought were good reasons, I used their first dance track as part of it (and yes, I know this isn't strictly allowed.) I uploaded it as PRIVATE video on YT so my assistant could see it. Pretty much before upload finished, I had a copyright claim from Volbeat (yeah, really). Though apparently they are currently happy for me to use the music in exchange for running adverts - which seems nice of them.

IMO the bigger the better - YT will downsample for people on lower connections - 1080 is nice.

Absolutely - there is, as they say, an app for that.

4. Any other issues I need to be aware of?

Maybe turn comments off. Some people like to leave hurtful comments about the people in videos which is pretty horrid.

BTW, if you're interested (and have 13 mins - yeah, I know - the end is worth it though).

Just a thought but if you include your own business contact information at any point in the show you will require an additional licence for showing on Youtube.
