Yes
I have been asked to photograph my brothers wedding next May but I will also be acting as best man and don't really think it is a sensible thing to do both.

My brother does not have money to pay a pro photographer so I wondered if anyone would like to use his wedding as a way of building their portfolio? I will take my kit with me but would want someone else to take the lead so that I can enjoy the day. Obvious;ly my bro would sign a release for you to use the photographs taken on the day for your own marketing etc and we would expect just a CD/DVD with the images on. I am happy to post process them if needed.

The day will consist of a church wedding and an evening in a local venue (I would not expect anyone to stay long after the main church/formal photo's unless they wanted to), it is between Huddersfield and Halifax just off the M62 in West Yorkshire and I would cover travel expenses etc.

Anyone interested? If so I'd be keen to see some samples of your work so that I can make sure my bro does not end up with pics from a fuji compact

Cheers in advance

Stuart

Well if your brother doesn't want to pay a pro photographer, why should he expect anything.

Starver.

Day & Date & Venue(s) might help m8 :)

I'm not sure richpips' comment is helpful or deserved :shake:

Freebies can be a very useful means of gaining images for a portfolio with no real pressure, and hence useful to many

Day & Date & Venue(s) is a must though to gain any real interest :)

OOOH ! thats a bit severe. have you never been broke :nono:

Err yes I have.

Would I expect something for nothing, err no.

Caveat if I was starving I'd taken what was given even a picture with a (sic) "Fufi compact"

His brother asked him to do it, as he's his brother, and generally brothers don't charge each other... so, wishing to have a good time at the wedding (and not spend the whole day running around stressed with camera in hand), he's sensibly approached the nice people on here, one of which I'm sure will be more than happy to help out...

Being skint is bad, getting married is just plain stupid... his photos may be the only thing he doesn't pay for for the rest of his life!! :D

Yes probably.

I thought there wasn't going to be a photographers wanted thing going on here.
7 posts since 2007, hardly a regular wanting a favour.

Woah, someone put a pip in your pipe?

There are loads of rookie togs on here who would love to do this, including me. No one cares if he has 8 posts or 8000 as its just a offer for experience and maybe to chat with another person who enjoys the hobby.

That's OK by me enjoy.

Just seems he's expecting pro results for amateur prices.

I'll wind my neck in (for now)

Your pretty close to Huddersfield, why don't you give it a go. :D

I get paid enough doing things I am good at. Who knows one day i might do a wedding, but the fact is it's not my thing. If you want some good pictures of a wedding, or any other type of event pay someone who does that sort of thing well.

I dont have more online at the moment.

Stuart, I would be interested if it wasn't so far away- especially as your not paying anything, its a 500mile round trip for me!

I may also be interested. I live in Huddersfield so if you can let us know the exact date and venue that may help...!

I will upload some pics from the last wedding i did to flickr later.

he does say in his OP he's covering travel expenses

"I would cover travel expenses etc."

good luck with finding somebody - but telling the date would help no end

You are indeed correct boyfalldown- can you tell I haven't had coffee yet?. Well if your willing to cover my expenses Stuart- I can provide examples etc :)

Firstly - thanks for the offers of assistance, mart77 your pics look great! I have had a couple of messages from other people too so would like to take a look at sample pics over the next couple of days. If it makes sense for the photographers then perhaps the responsibility could be shared by two people, assuming the expenses don't amount to hundreds...

Pic of the church shamelessly linked on flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/atoach/3501396233/in/set-72157622317493935/ and more here http://erringdenbenefice.org.uk/St Michaels.htm

The details I missed from the original post - wedding is on Saturday 22nd of May, ceremony starts at 2.30.pm at st johns church at cragg vale then the onto Elland cricket club.

Richpips - my brother was made redundant from his (poorly paid) carpentry job 2 months ago hence his desire not to spend any money on photography. I have to say your comments are pretty offensive and you clearly have no idea how the real world works for people serious about advancing their ambitions in photography! Your comments will be welcomed elsewhere I'm sure but please keep them off my thread as you offer no useful input.

Well for starters maybe you might have said that your brother was now unemployed.

As to advancing ones ambitions in photography, I earn a living doing so, and have never needed to give my time away for free.

Maybe my input is no use to you, but you are not the only person who reads this forum.

Why people should be expected to do a semi pro job for no money bar their expenses eludes me.

richpips - thanks again for your input and good luck with your successful career in photography!

To anyone else reading, please do not to be put off by comments in this thread. I have been a budding amateur photographer for years and would love the opportunity to shoot a wedding (although not for a friend). People in the industry, and even wannabe photographers, can forget how difficult it is to gain a start in business. In fact some may view us amateurs as the competition! In my opinion if a professional photographer is worth their salt then their style will drive their prices and indeed they will never look back or work for free again.... finding your style and honing your skills is something you can only achieve through practice.

Had it not been a Saturday I was going to offer to pop along too as you're close to me

I know quite a few Pros, both Wedding & otherwise, and many of them did indeed start by offering work for free for the experience/portfolio

I also do a lot of free work for portraits - mostly as I make more money that way

I took your comment StuW on face value... My brother does not have money to pay a pro photographer - the fact that he is unemployed doesn't come into it for me, there are plenty of people about who simply cannot afford everything they'd like (most of us!) and Weddings are no different; and while it may seem odd to photographers photography is not always a high priority for those getting married. By asking on here I take it photography is a high desire for your brother and while offering experience to prospective Pros is potentially risky I feel it's the right choice for all concerned

I hope you all have a great day, and that the help offered on here works for both the couple and the photographer(s) too :)
