Does any one have any information or help they can give to me for doing weddings. I seriously want to go into wedding photography! Would i need to go on a college course.
If there is anything you think of please let me know need as much help as i can get to know as much as possible so that i can get the best results and give the best service.
Do people use external flashes on camera or do they prefer to use them on brackets away from the camera?

Where do people get prints from and albums? What sort of insurance is required?

MANY thanks
Matt

Q Papa.......

AFAIK there are no college courses available (or needed) on wedding photography.

There are plenty of short courses, the value of which is very doubtful IMO.

The best learning method by far is to 'tagalong' with an experienced pro (or preferably with several different ones) to learn the realities of wedding photograpy.

All the info you want is in my *removed*

Thanks Garry. I think i will find a tagalong soon.

One problem i cant seem to get onto that tutorial i just get a blank error page. Im on MAc and i have tried firefox, opera and safari and cant access it.

Can anyone else access the tutorial?

It should work, but here's the URL

Nope still cant access the site mate.
*removed* because it could not connect to the server *removed*.

Cheers for the link that seems to be a good guide. Want to see what the photolearn one has in it but i cant access it which is a pain.

Is it best to shoot in Manual or in AV or TV. What sort of aperture would be best to get nice sharp images of bride and groom together?

Any other helpful tips/guides?

You should do a search on here for 'wedding photography'. There are many threads with lots of tips.

This is what i get - Safari can’t open the page *removed* because it could not connect to the server *removed*.
This is strange, it's working fine for me and I've just tried it in IE7, Firefox and Safari. The problem seems to be at your end:'(

Did a quick search and not much came up tbh which is why i decided to start up a new thread.

Not sure what else to do to get it to work. Any way of you posting up the text or anything like that?

I shoot Manual. Set aperture and shutter speed as I need them and then adjust ISO to get the exposure correct. 2 camera bodies necessary, I don't go above 70mm (yet - planning on getting a 70-200 2.8L IS at some stage), lots of memory - I have about 12 gigabytes. I have insurance on my gear and also public liability insurance in case someone injures themselves and it's my fault(fingers crossed that won't happen!). You need to be clear in the shots you want to get but also be able to adapt to what the day throws at you and you have to know your camera inside-out!

Cheers for that give me some reading to do lol Can i ask where you get your insurance from. Also here do you get prints from and albums? Much appreciated.
Also what lens do you have are the L lenseS?

I use photoguard for my insurance. I get prints locally at Canterbury Camera Centre. I don't yet do the albums, as I'm still fairly new and refining my products and services.

No L yet for me, just what you see in my signature - all Sigma glass - I don't use the 70-300 as it's just not up to it but the other 3 are great. The 30mm f1.4 is a cracker for weddings, the 24-70 is the main workhorse and the 10-20 is surprisingly useful as indoors (and sometimes outdoors) there's not always a lot of space.

Hi Garry

I thought you were a fashion & commercial tog - how come you've got tutorials for sale on just about everything?

Have you done it all and are just really really old ???

:D:D:D

Seriously though, those tutorials are easily long enough to be a 'proper' book, have you tried that route too or is pdf just easier?

I'm just really old - 63 this month:lol:

I earn my living from advertising & commercial photography, which includes a fair bit of fashion. Until last year I did wedding photography too, mainly because I enjoyed it, but had to stop taking bookings because of health problems (thankfully now behind me) and I've done just about everything except news & sport in the past.

I've never really considered getting them printed in book form - too expensive and the great advantage of my written tutorials and videos is that I can keep them up to date, which is difficult to say the least with printed books.

You sold many?

Cant get on the site so not able to purchase it. If i was to get on and buy it (which i cant) and you updated it would i get a free download to the updated version?

"How good is it?"

He's hardly going to say 'crap' now is he !!!

For a fiver anything with that many pages and photos has got to have something of use in it for anyone, and especially someone so new to it

Tell you what - you buy it and you tell us how good it is

Yes, I've now PM'd the link to you. Presumably a moderator removed the link because it's viewed as spam :rules: and I understand that, although it was a specific answer to a specific question so I don't view it as spam...

It seems that only 'traders' can post links but I can't find out how to become a trader and my email asking for info didn't get a reply:bonk:

I'll raise that for you :)

How would i arrange set up tagging along with a pro? Are there people on here willing to let me tagalong?
Many Thanks

You could try finding the togs in your area and give them a call. Yell.com is probably a good place to start. You'll probably find they get a lot of requests like this and most are ignored.

As mentioned in another thread recently, there's a considerable difference between being an assitant and 2nd shooter so have a clear understanding of what you want to get from it before you speak to anyone, if you come across as vague you'll not set a good impression.

Near Gatwick! Anyone want to let me tag along please PM im available weekends and am extremely willing and want to learn!

I dont really want to be an assistant i dont think. Id rather be a second shooter to get practice, really need to just see how it all works and what people expect and how the tog handles the day.

Whats the diff between an assistant and a second shooter... does the assistant not take any photos at all?

Im guessing that the assistant will assist the tog in getting his equipment ready in time preparing stuff for him and not taking pics. where as a second shooter will be the tog taking more candid shots while the main tog does the formal stuff. Thats what i imagine.

You'd probably learn more as an assistant than as a 2nd shooter. A 2nd shooter is going to be left his/her own devices to a degree. "You go cover the candids over there while I shoot the couple here", etc.

Practice shots are expendable, shots from a 2nd shooter aren't and a wedding shoot isn't the time to practice :nono:

If it's practice you want get invited to as many weddings as possible and take your camera, there's no pressure on you to deliver and you can make lots of mistakes to learn from.

An assistant will spend time alongside the tog, setting up gear, changing lenses, cards, etc and will get to see and hear how the tog works which, by the sounds of it, is what you need to be doing.

Michael sorry, do you have the sigma 24-70 or the canon??

Well im willing to be an assistant for a while. I will be attending two weddings this year and one next year. Will try and get as many invites as possible.

I just noticed that signatures only appear on the first post you make in a thread! Wierd!

I have the Sigma 24-70. It's a good lens but a bit loud sometimes which makes you a bit self aware during the quiet bits in wedding ceremonies!!

Oh right cheers! Do you do alot of weddings Michael?

(ive only just realised that about the signature lol weird!)

They dont, it all depends on how much you type into the reply thread. I'm not sure how many letters/words/characters it has to be, and I dont think it includes quoted text. :)
