Hi all,

Well, I have a year (just under) to get good! Friends are getting married in Goa in Jan and have asked me to do the photos. I am in no way a professional and although have enjoyed taking photos for years have only seriously been snapping for approx 6 months.
My friends know this but and are still willing to give it a go. So, apart from seriously practising, reading, learning, what advice would you offer.

Baring in mind the bright sun, beach, sea, contrasting colours and all the other helps and hidrances of somewhere like goa what would you seggest as a shots and what equipment.

At the moment I have
400D - Thinking of getting a 40D and keeping the 400 as spare/wifes.
Sigma 10-20 mm
Sigma 17-70
Sigma 70-300
430Ex flash (no diffusers yet)
Decent ish tripod
Wireless remote

All help/advice greatly appreciated. I would really like to give them a great album as a present.

Thanks
Gpc

oooh, i do suggest a polarizer or nd filter.
that may help with the bright sun, flares etc.
:)

Apart from seriously practising, reading & learning there isn't all that much you can do, you seem to have covered most bases with those three

I think one major thing I would look up is using your flash correctly (make sure you get a diffuser too) as fill flash could play a a major role in how well your images turn out - especially with the light levels/sun in Goa!
The beaches will offer great opportunities for shots, you just need to be careful when changing lenses, etc.

I think your best bet would be to have a proper think about the kind of shots you'll be going for, sample shots, etc & try to recreate them as practice. Once you feel more confident doing this the re-ask your question here a bit more specifically & you'll receive more specific advice

Thanks Moomike Definately need to learn how to use the flash especially for fill.

An L lens would be nice, but rather pricey, although i may be able to hire one, any recomendations on which one?

Consider a 50mm f1.8 . It may be darker than you think towards sunset, or under the trees and the 50 gives you a fast lens and a nice short tele for pleasing portraits.

The technical side of the photography is pretty simple in my opinion, its just getting it right under a bit of pressure. The main skill is people handling - making sure they pose properly. In my limited expereince a large number of men get a bit soppy, and demonstrate there afffection for the partner by putting an arm around the shoulder, nice, but they look weird hunched up and uneven. You need to say stop that, stand like this, in a manner that doesnt offend, but gets them to obey you.

well, if you were gonna hire an L lens, and you chose the fiddy, i would say get the f1.2...

probably gonna get a 50mm 1.8 at some point this year to practice portraits with...hell....gonna order one now!

Apart from the 50, is there another L lens that would cover it. Will probably hire one from the lens people on here.

I suppose if I have the sigma 10-20, nifty 50 and the 70-300 i may not need the 17-70 (although this does go down to f2.8 at the 17 end which could come in handy).....still, if i have the room i may as well take them all.

Thanks for the tips.
They are after really natural reportage typ photography with a few of the obligatory family photos thrown in.
