I have been thinking about making my own website. But beyond a domain name I have no idea of the best way to go about it.

Is it better to use one of the online domain name and site builder packages? Should i use one of the online galleries to mak a site from. Or should i get a program like dremweaver and build it myself.

Any other tips at all?

How clued up are you with this sort of thing?

Do you like to get your hands dirty sort of thing or like a program to do it for you?

I made a sit using dreamweaver mx about 6 years ago I imagine things have changed a bit since then.

I assume by hands dirty you mean HTML I think that is probably a bit more than I'd want to do to begin with. But never say never If something worths doing and all that.

Depends on how soon you want it. It starts from ready made templates using http://www.clikpic.com/ especially developed for all kinds and levels of photographers [from £35 per year] to hosting your website from £20 quids per year on http://www.streamline.net/ with you first building it up.

The above website are usually member suggested or used by tpf members.

Good luck.

You could try one of these link I have one still in the box, I'm waiting for a wet Sunday to launch it.

Hi interesting, would you know if there are any additional costs, such as a yearly on the domain name, or is this a one off payment?.

cheers

I use Supanames as hosts and with them, a co.uk domain is usually free and a .com is about £7.50 for a year. Don't know about other hosts though.

These are rpetty good, there web buidling packages are fab too. And they have a very helpful service desk!!
SOme great deals, ie buy a package for a year, and recieve free domain too.

Have fun!

Have a look at www.amazinginternet.co.uk

They give u templates so u can build ** own site,up and running in 24hours, photos are easy to upload and support is great as they are based in London and somebody is always there to help when u ring them.

For £29 a month, u can have up to 500 images and u can also expand on your site after that.

Thats who I got my site from. www.sashakwan.com :)

perhaps a little late here.... but i'd say if you're starting a web site and actually want it to be 'yours' and something you feel proud of. Start coding some basic HTML for form your content.
then worry about CSS etc once you've got the content ready to be styled :D
always the best strategy

in terms of a host...

I'm with streamline and they're cheap and have great support.
quick example - I recently had issues with the support they (don't) offer to forward a domain to a sub domain. In the end I got a letter from their CEO (and a chocolate bar) asking for me to send him some feedback and my thoughts on the matter.

I am with Marksweb, the best way to start is to start playing around with html. Then worry *** the styles later.
You will feel more proud of this as it will be your own creation.
If you do decide to start learning html etc, this is a fab site to begin with
http://www.w3schools.com
Gives you tutorials, examples and really helps the beginner.

If you are thinking of going pro (ever) then I would advise buying a .co.uk domain so that your website appears higher in a Google UK search.

For the same reason if you are Pro now or are creating the site with the intention of becoming Pro / Semi-pro then ensure you have a UK hosting company as again this will make a big difference in how high you appear in Google (remember that most people will only look on the first page of results, and then usually restrict where they look to the first couple of sites).

If you are just looking for an alternative to Flickr, I'd get a .co.uk (cheaper than a .com anyway) and host it where it's cheap. I'd also second the Gallery2 option, perhaps beind a simple front page, easy to set up and maintain with loads of skins available.

For domains try : http://www.123-reg.co.uk/ (if you can find any cheaper than this then please share the info)

For site templates try : http://www.oswd.org/ also for images as already suggested that coppermine is good.

For hosting their are thousands. For a small static site you dont need to spend much. Consider clook I find them to be good with excellent customer services.

Google add no extra weight for .co.uk. They are the cheapest domains though so worth thinking about for that reason. Also youll probably be competing on pretty unique keywords on a business name so no real worries about people finding you.

Two years ago, a friend told me to open a blank page in Microsoft Word, put my name on it and save it as an .html page.

That was my start and I had to work everything else out myself from there!!! :D

I made lots of mistakes.... but I did it with the help of Dreamweaver.. I have no knowledge of code or suchlike.

If you feel up for a challenge you can do the same.. or find ready made sites ... or even get a company to make it for you.

Just use something like gallery 2 or coppermine, there are have some decent skins available for them and they'll most likely do everything you need and more.
yeah this is certainly the quick fix to getting your images on your site.
I use both a gallery and a photo blog for those times when i want to spread things further than flickr!

These kind of things are still really easy to cusomise, as you can see i've adjusted some of the CSS in my SimplePhotos Gallery to reflect the rest of my site. So thats certainly something else i'd look into if i were you :)
