Dunno if anyone can help...

I have been asked to write a website for a mate that runs/is the licensee for a pub. Thing is... her original website was written for her by someone who has not only charged for his services, but arranged hosting via a 3rd party hosting company, registered the URL, etc. Thing is, he regurlarly denies her ALL access to the admin pages, so she can't change the page content in any way. Or upload the shiny new website I've designed for her!

As a result, the website is largely being used as a tool to promote his own band promotion company, his own web design services, and on the face of it has very little to do with promoting my mate's pub.

She knows the name of the company doing the hosting, but is not sure what she can do.

Can anyone offer any advice?
 
Sounds like she really needs to see a solicitor Chris. Unfortunately it will come down to what she can prove about the nature/terms of the original agreement, and so many of these sort of transactions are done without any record or written agreement. If this guy has regstered the url in his own name, I wouldn't hold out much hope of your friend getting a satisfactory conclusion and she might have to charge it up to experience.

Just my take on it mate, you may get other views to the contrary.
 
I don't think a solicitor would do any good in this case.

The only option is to get a new domain name and start from scratch.
Thats if they're unhappy with the service provided already.
 
have to agree with the above. for the sale of a domain name, it could take ages and cost alot to try and sort that out and the chance of success doesnt sound great.

Supanames do reallt cheap hosting, my friend uses them for all his clients and swears by them for cheap, easy to use and reliable. I think they do a whole package including domain name is about £30 a year
 
if shes got the letter from nominet for the domain she can sort that out and use other hosting, such as www.hostinghtml.com or catalyst2 or even register1

I used to be ad designer for an company in Manchester City Centre and we came across this problem all the time...small companies that had been tied into dodgy deals.

You are very unlikely to get the hosting back but you can use Nominets' dispute process to fight for the domain name.

You coluld always cut your losses and get another/similar domain name but unfortunately this means changing email addresses too which is a bummer.

I've been in touch with ukreg (who the old designer registered the name with) and they have given me a domain release form. All she has to do, apparently, is prove that the old designer did the work for her and that she is who she says she is...

Fingers crossed... the new site has some of my photos on it... ;)

Yeah, no problems - when it's all done and dusted... I've got to keep it all very much under my hat for now (for obvious reasons!) :naughty:
 
do a who is search to see who the domain name is registered too, if it is her then just fax a letterhead telling them to point the domain to the new server.
 
Two domains registered, Gary. The .co.uk one seems to be registered to the pub, but the .com name is registered to somebody who has since gone out of business. But the registration agents are the same in both instances, which ought to make it a lot easier...

Shouldn't be to much bother then, when you tell them to move it, it can take a few day's but in reality it shouldn't take more than 1 hour, depends how good a day they are having.
