Website hits to increase ranking?

No expert myself, but simplistically yes. Realistically, I think it depends a lot on where those visits are coming from, their duration, use of the site etc. Even then it's just one small factor.

I've never seen anything that suggests the number of hits you receive will affect your ranking.

What is important to Google now is fresh, relevant content.
Having a secure site gives a bit if weight as does having a responsive site (or mobile friendly version of your site) and of course back links to a point. Google doesn't give as much weight to these anymore unless your links are from other well known relevant sites.

You need to get links into your site from pages with relevant/related content that are themselves on well ranked sites.... at least well ranked as far as your search terms are concerned.

You need to also look at bounce rate. If a person visits your site and leaves without viewing any more pages, that's considered a bounce. A high bounce rate out of Google Analytics will affect your ranking. This is why you will quite often reach blogs and articles that require you to click on a link in order to read the remainder of the article.

Best way to get No1 on Google is to have world class pics on your website :) ............so I was told
