My partner has started a new small business and as she's not very computer literate the task has fallen to me to do all the marketing etc. (Blind leading the blind comes to mind).

We need a website, can anyone advise me regarding the easiest and most efficient way of going about it please?

Thanks, Tim.

There's one simple answer here; pay an expert to do it for you. (y)

This - but then the million dollar question is who??

What sort of business is it? If a simple one, then a good one from Squarespace or Wix would be ideal - they do all the techie stuff, the key is the material. I have seen too many nice sites with poor copyright / content. What is the purpose for the site - lead generation?

:plus1: to all the above.

Though possibly worth considering using such as this company/service

AFAIK it has a template based self builder but for a fee they will build it for you.

On the face of it has and/or offers all the functions & bolt on's needed..........?

It is so much easier now than it's ever been. All you have to do is write the content/information you want to be displayed and supply artwork and/or pictures to suit.

Using one of the above recommended companies will make this relatively easy and painless. However, most are boring, over-utilised and unimaginative. This route will be cheap in the short term, but will work out more expensive in the long run. It is very important to ensure that the spelling and grammar are correct - nothing will send me on to the next site faster than if this is done badly.

By far the best way, is to get someone to design you a bespoke site and have it hosted on your own domain. Obviously, there will be an upfront cost to this, but the only ongoing costs will be the re-registration of your domain name and the cost of hosting.

Thanks for the replies. I started a business in ‘06 myself and simply paid someone to do it for me, £150 or thereabouts initially I think. I couldn’t post content on there myself though and would wish to update my partner's website fairly frequently.

It’s a dog grooming business to begin with, expanding hopefully into dog supplies, dog walking and even (or possibly) pet photography as we have the room. It’s called 'The Dog House' and located in the village of Bredon, near Tewkesbury.

Most platforms like the ones I mentioned will have a shopping cart and ecommerce functionality I think - also a booking element too. In the short term its a relatively simple setup, getting the copy done will be the hardest part.

@KitsuneAndy does websites in WordPress and if you were looking for someone to build one he would be a good bet.

WordPress is probably the way to go for longevity and has some tools to help you with your SEO etc. I actually just launched a site for a dog grooming business a couple of weeks ago.
