Hi

I have hired a website designer who agreed to design my website including a blog and image gallery which is fully editable my me. I have agreed to pay him £200 plus small fees for server and a .co.uk name. Initially I had quotes from a number of website designers but this guy blew me away with a working index page as an example of how he works so I decided to go with him. My main issue is my Gallery. I need it to be fully editable by me and look very clean and striking. The Gallery he had produced is not what I was expecting. He has admitted that he can not find any suitable software to give me what I need. I feel let down and like I am doing his job for him by looking for the software for him.

Could anyone recommend any suitable Gallery software which I could easily add images to and show the categories seperately in a small thumbnail format as an image with text stating that specific category? I need the viewer to be able to simply click on that thumb nail catagory and be brought into a larger slide show of that category?

I realise that I am being very specific so ANY suggestions would be greatly appreciated:shrug:

Hi -

Light Blue: Photo, our studio management system, can generate web galleries linked to PayPal from your images (and include watermarks if you want). See www.lightbluesoftware.com/samplegallery for an example of what it can do.

The galleries are generated from Light Blue: Photo on a shoot-by-shoot basis, rather than splitting them into categories, but you could get around that by creating a shoot for each category, and then regenerating the gallery every time you wanted to add images. (Regeneration takes a few seconds.)

Light Blue: Photo can also help you manage your shoots, contacts, orders and expenditure - check out www.lightbluesoftware.com and the tutorials at www.lightbluesoftware.com/tutorials for more information. (Alternatively, just drop us a line at admin@lightbluesoftware.com - we're friendly people!)

Best wishes,

Hamish

I'm not sure if it would fit with the rest of your design, but it is relatively straightforward to edit the stylesheets that get created, but it might be worth having a look at jalbum (it's free).

Fairly sure (though haven't had time to check) that some of the premium wordpress themes do something similar as well.

To be honest though, your web chap, should be able to create what you need manually I'm not a programmer, but have tinkered with webapps before and what you're after could be easily achieved with a database and a bit of java, and an admin page for you to upload new images and create albums etc. The hardest part (in my mind) would be to build it so it was "fully editable".

Just FYI, I am not sure what kind of site and functionality you are after, but have a look at mine (link in sig) I did all this myself using free software and free addons... whole site including domain name cost me £7 and £6 per month to host so beware of what you pay for.

I learnt all the necessary skills to modify themes, php and css myself and trust me its not that hard.

If you need any help or advice, I am happy to help where I can :)

Thank you for your suggestion http://jalbum.net/
The top right image in black looks similar to another sight which is exactly what I'm looking for. The website designer made me believe that he could give me this initially and said that he thought her designer used Cenko software? I feel mislead.

Many thanks

http://www.lathamcommunications.com/ - are in Canada so your web designer is hardly competition - they might very well just tell you - why wouldn't they? Anyway, you'll never know if you don't ask. Often the most direct way is simplest!

£200 is nothing for what you are asking for

Totally integrating packages like Gallery2 and Wordpress into a static site is very easy (but often painstaking) work for an experienced designer

I know that I have got a good deal but the conditions of me using him were that he would deliver what I asked for, otherwise it is £200 down the drain. I have been very tolerant waiting whilst he re-edits pages that do not work visually as I had in the back of my mind that I have only paid £200 but in the end I had to assert myself.

He has never done a photographic website before which was reflected in the price he charged. It is a good opportunity for him to build his portfolio:thumbs:

If he could not deliver what I asked for he should not have told me that he could:)

zen gallery is good

http://www.zenphoto.org/

or there is a wordpress version, which is easy enough, as Richard says, an experienced geek can do it quick enough. Do you have a link to your current site?

Could I possibly have your views on the following comment just emailed to me by my website designer? Do you agree? I know 0 about webdesign:bonk:

"I have immediately come to have a look at that jAlbum you sent me - firstly you are limited to 30mb storage (does not store images on your own server) and secondly is even more limited than our current gallery"

Just so I'm clear http://www.dezinerfolio.com/dfgallery-2/free-flash-gallery is what he has used and I hate it!
Kind regards

from thier FAQ

"The free Jalbum account holds 30Mb, which is approximately 200 web-sized photos. If you want to upload more, you can upgrade to Premium or Power account. Consider it a fair, relaxed way to try out Jalbum accounts."

As I said look at installing software like Gallery2 in your own webspace

I may have missed something here, I have the dreaded oink flu and am half asleep still, but the JAlbum limitations only apply if you host your gallery with them.

If you use your own web space to host your gallery then there are no limitations.
