Yes
So ideally I want to be able to create a website to show some of the stuff I make. What would be good is if I was able to add pictures myself as and when a job is finished. A blog type thing may also be a nice touch just to keep the interest there.
My question is, is this best left to a professional web designer or with a little research is it something I could make and maintain myself ? I'd prefer the latter if possible, so I get an understanding of how it's all set up plus have the ability to chop and change things as and when.
Web design isn't something I've ever done before but do have a picture in my head of how id like it to be.
I keep seeing adverts on tv for this type of thing (1 &1 i think ) but expect theres probably good and bad places for this type of thing.
Suggestions most appreciated.

In a word: Wordpress

Wordpress is a very easy to set up and use content management system/blogging software.

I think you would find it easy enough to work out how to use it and there are plenty of knowledgeable people about that can help should you get stuck.

A self hosted Wordpress website is the way to go but you can try it out and get a feel for it by setting up a free one at: Wordpress.com

Bear in mind that the free one will have some limitations in place on what you can and can not do which is why I say a self hosted one is the way to go.

Hope this helps.

Take care,

Keith

I found Wix http://www.wix.com/ very good, it is basically a drag and drop set up much like putting a power point presentation together. You can set the site up fro free with a bit of Wix branding. You then have to pay about £6/month to remove the branding use you own domain name etc.

I only moved from it because I needed clients to be able to download full res images and at the time watermarking was a propblem but they may have sorted that now.

Thanks for the suggestions. I opened a free account with weebly yesterday and played around with it for quite a while. I'll do the same with the other suggestions just to get a feel for which one is better.
First thoughts are it seems like im limited to only being able to use the themes which they provide- for instance it would be nice to be able to add my own background wallpaper thingy lol. Would the wordpress site give me more flexibility in altering small bits about ?- no doubt it would be a bit trickier to master even if it were possible but think mastering the one with the most options would be the way forward.

Thanks

I'd definitely recommend WordPress - from an absolute newbie to a fully functioning and multi-layered community website 6 months later I don't think any other option would have given this.

I like the way WordPress allows you to customise almost everything whilst keeping it simple and easy to manage/edit/update.

The key question is;

Do you really want a fully functioning website or somewhere you can direct customers to?

Because the Weebly / Wix / Vistaprint type options are useless for getting you into search rankings.

The phrase SEO might mean nothing to you just now, but give it 6 months and you'll be able to think about little else. For this alone - Wordpress all the way.

So...I've looked on the wordpress website and first thing I've noticed is I need to upload the wordpress programme file thing to a server. Can anyone recommend any free ones just so I can see if its something I'll be able to do ? The first free 250mb one I clicked scared me after reading something about having a max 10% allocation for pictures- thats what the majority of the website would be for.

Monday I managed to twist my knee so im currently following advice and resting it- im thinking now would be a good time to pass the boredom trying to fathom this out.

Thanks

Free hosting is worth every penny it costs - and usually not a penny more.

If you're serious about this, cheap hosting is very reasonable and plentiful. and there's some really good free or cheap wordpress themes. Buy a domain (less than a tenner) and some 'pay per month' hosting, if you can't get on with it, the whole exercise will cost no more than a takeaway for you and the missus.
If you do get on with it, it's never gonna cost you a packet. look in the computers section there's always threads about hosting packages.

There is a way of hosting wordpress locally to have a play, but I think it then gets tricky to transfer your work to a host. you might as well just do it.

Got to admit I originally thought I'd signed up to a free mess around wordpress site - wordpress.com. Turns out the one I needed was wordpress.org - balls lol. I'd signed up to a free blog. Its all good at the moment. Making progress, albeit very slowly. Im sure stuff that seems baffling now will be much clearer in a few months time.
