Hi All

I hope I have chosen the right fora

I am looking for a some advice as to makes & models of weather/water proof outer gear i.e. a jacket & trousers. Cannot justify a fortune for gear that will only get occassional use but in November I am going to Donna Nook on the North Sea coast of the UK to photograph the seals. So the gear needs to be up to laying and crawling on the sand as well as good general protection. I would be using this with under layers of fleece/waistcoat and likely lined trousers i.e. working on the layers principal.

TIA for any insight and pointers to suppliers ideally in the SE counties

The cheapest way is to buy the ex army goretex jacket and trousers. I picked up a jacket for £30 and trousers for £16.
Nice hard wearing gear and you're not afraid to get it dirty. I've done the 'proper expensive' route and to be honest, I can wreck this stuff without worrying about the expense of replacing it.

Hi Kev

Many thanks, your experience & user insight is very welcome. For the record others have also advsied the braodly similar suggestions ~ so a trip to a recommended army surplus shop about 30mins drive from me is on the books.

How wind & waterproof is Goretex and if its army surplus should it be (re)treated to improve/restore its "properties" ?

:)

I thought Kev's idea was brilliant too! So I was just searching around for army surplus kit and came across this LINK.

I'm afraid it's on the dreaded flebay (a dealer I think) but it looks ideal for what you're after! And no.... I've no connection at all, not even as a customer. But id does seem good for the money.

cheers

It's totally water and wind proof I unless there's a hole in it or it has de-laminated from the facing fabric. when you look at a second hand jacket look for high wear areas that feel like the fabric is broken into several layers (unless the whole jacket is normally like that obviously).

Whatever you get will probably benefit from washing and re-proofing with Nikwax TX system or similar, which you can buy in any outdoor shop. The spray on re-proofing is far better than the wash in version.

army every time its made to crawl about in plus its camo good for wild life

ps if you can go to the shop it comes in different grades some can be nackered

You can even get brand new from the Army shops too. Its not expensive at all.
