WD My Book Live

I was looking into buying some new data storage and thought of the WD My Book Live. I was wondering if anybody knows if I can use Lightroom and get it to sync with My Book Live. I ask this beacuse I have Lightroom on two laptops and would love to be able to get the catalogues on both laptops wirelessly.

you cant put a lightroom catalogue on a network drive, it wont let you.

you can put your image files on the network drive though.

You've no idea what hassles this causes at work Having students solely responsible for their catalogues on their own storage creates some interesting problems It teaches them the value of data back up pretty damned sharpish though

So what your saying is the source images can be stored on the cloud device but not the catalogue?

well its not really a cloud as locally itd just be a NAS but correct.

the only way you could do it would maybe use the import/export catalogues to keep the two the same?

Only call it a cliff as that is how WD described it on their site.

Do you think having the source files and exporting down to the WD would be slow?

it would be an arse ache to be honest. over wireless it would be slow.

lightroom isnt designed for multiple users and networks unfortunately.

so the best thing to do would to be export locally on the laptop then regular synch to the external hard drive then delete them locally so as not to clog up laptop?

you could import them into LR on the laptop and then move them once finished processing, yes. but that doesnt get around the need for 2 catalogues, theyll not show each others edits unless you export the catalogue on one and import it to the other.

or just keep all of the RAW/JPG on the WD and have a catalogue on each machine (again youll need to export catalogues if you want the same on each).

either way its a faff if you want both machines with LR on.
