hey hey

got a spare room 10ft 6 by 7ft 6 that i want to turn into a little studio to take pics of my nipper.

i am going to get a lastolite hi lite background. i think i need a 3 head kit...2 to light the background and 1 key light.

my question is...

in such a small room will 3 100w lights be enough or will i need more wattage??

cheers guys

I'd say they'd be fine. We use 200-watt lights in a studio 20ft x 10ft and we hardly ever go above half power, simply because there's so much light bouncing around it gets hard to control. In a room like yours then 100s should be fine. Painting the walls and ceiling black will help stop some light bouncing around. :)

Thanks dude

which lights does anyone recommend. Will only need 2 lights.

how much do you want to spend, do you want a kit or sort it yourself, radio reliability or IR cheapness?

I'm gonna be no help but these q might help other peeps ;)

I got a kit with 3 180w lights for a room a little bit bigger with no problems. I use a sync lead to one of the lights and the other two trigger in slave mode. I find that this suits me better.

Also and I don't know if this helps but I got two soft boxes and an umbrella. I found that the umbrella doesn't get used but the soft boxes do. Getting a kit often has the advantage that it will also include other smaller extras such as a snoot, barn doors, colour gels etc.

A kit with ir I think. Budget of £400 ish

You should get a reasonable kit for that much. I spent £200 on the stable imaging kit plus an extra £15 on the brolly. I definitely think that larger soft boxes would be an advantage the smallish ones I have are ok but I would love a BIG one {edit I think I will change that!}... I would love a very large soft box. Maybe next year I will buy a 6' x 4' one :)

Cheers cowaski

what make/ model are your lights? How big is your room? What colour are your Walls?

Cheers dude

I have been using my living room BUT I am currently moving into the garage. The floor will be dk grey garage floor paint and this will continue 6 inches up the walls. Then there will be marine ply up all the walls and this is being painted matt dk grey. I am yet to buy my back drop stand but will be getting one of stable imaging or possibly flash if he starts selling them!

Anyway this was the thread that I started when I was looking: HERE

This is a link the Stable Imaging's web site: HERE

and specifically the 3 lamp kit here

Neil from Stable Imaging is a very helpful chap too. Give him a ring and tell him I sent you :) Their 3 lamp kit is £199 and if you got that you would have enough left for a back drop stand plus back drops!

Cheers dude. A good bArgain methinks.

Yes, the build quality might not quite be up to the standard of Lastolite or the even more expensive ones but seriously I have had no problems at all the kits is very comprehensive (it even included a sync lead!).

One thing I would add is a flash to sync lead adapter for £5 from ebay. Just plug your sync lead into it and then when you hook up your camera you can just attach the adapter to the hot shoe and away you go. With a Nikon it also stops you losing the sync cable weather protector cover :)

RF is more reliable than IR, I have some interfit heads and the IR trigger is useless - I just hook them up to the ebay triggers i use for my speedlights

We have Bowens Gemini 200. Pretty good value and build quality. Think Jessops does them as a kit with supplied stands, softboxes, snoots etc.
