I have a very solid wooden garden bench, I'm not sure what wood it is. Over the years it's gone a nice silver colour and started to crack a little which I quite like and want to keep the look. The problem is wasps like the cracks too, I think they must be getting some resin substance out of the cracks, it's got to the point where we can't use it without the risk of being stung. I need to put something in the cracks to seal it and deter them and was thinking of linseed oil or something that won't spoil the appearance of the bench but keep the devils away. Anyone know what might work?

Not sure of a solution myself, but linseed oil might attract more birds than anything! Few years back we restored some old sash windows, and used a linseed oil putty around the frames. Came back the following day and it had been mostly eaten away. Oops!

I tried a clear wax a few weeks ago and the birds pecked most of that out.

Teak oil, but the colour will probably change. Try it on the underside first.

I've just redone my outside table and chairs. Wasps hate teak oil!

Ant powder for two weeks then wash it off they won't come back until next year.

Buy a really big wasp to sit there and threaten the others.
Who knows, you may even end up becoming friends with it, someone to sit on your bench with :D

Try a PM to Chris the Cobra - IIRC he 's a pest controller so will be able to (and probably willing!) give you good advice as to how to stop the beggars.

Stick some jam jars about the place filled with a sugary substance and water. They'll ignore the table and head straight for their own sugary demise!

Yep the little b****r is stripping your bench for the "paper" to build its nest with.
As already been advised the bendiocarb powder
is the product that the professionals use to "destroy" wasps nests.

Its well worth brushing it over the bench with something like a paint brush.
But you won't be able to sit on it though, while its had it applied, it has a consistency,
rather like Talcum powder and gets everywhere. ;)
Keep young kids and animals away from it.
and don't get it near a fish pond, if you have one, it kills fish too.

Oh yes and its a Neurotoxin so don't go breathing it in either ;)

And people wonder why things like are Marked "for professional use" ONLY!
People that sell this product, on the likes of ebay
want bloody shooting IMO ;)

Im thinking any pcp air rifle would do the job. Reminds me of a time my workmates mrs rang the workshop phone to ask if i could get rid of a wasp that had got in their house- I mean c'mon, its a little wasp. So I rock up probably smelling a bit of bo and stroll on in like im the terminator. In my head im thinking ' where is this beast' but almost instantly feel something. If anyone's seen 'fresh prince of bel air' then I did a proper Carlton scream. To my workmates wife it must have looked like I was extremely hungry cause I was banging my belly. The little tinker had flown under my shirt and tried entering my body via my belly button. The pain was instantly distracted by my workmates mrs trying to keep a straight face but blatantly crying with laughter- that day we shared a moment, the wasp died and I realised I could ' Carlton scream ' lol

Bit of a difficult one as the chemicals are serious stuff, you want to keep the nice weathered look of the bench and wasps are persistent little dears.

Is there any chance you can live with their activities? I realise this is not easy with a bench where people want to sit but unless wasps are disturbed in a major way they tend to ignore people.

Nah! It's a no go zone at the moment, they're particularly busy today.
