I've heard the reports as I'm sure many others have but I don't really watch TV so I haven't seen anything on it. Seeing these photos has made it all so real though. Tanks, bombs dropped from planes and victims. It really hits home when I look at these images from the comfort of my laptop, sipping my glass of coke and listening to music on a nice set of speakers. Gotta respect the photographers who get sent to these places too. There are people fighting for what they believe in and then there are people risking their lives to document it.

These are shocking photos but you have to admire the photographers for getting up close and personal, it makes you think how lucky we really are!!

Exactly. We're all arguing over the correct focal length for street photography, which camera to buy, what lens etc and there's people out there risking their lives in the name of photojournalism. Its all such bs really when you think about it. The **** hits the fan and they grab their camera and go.

It is all bs, i certainly wouldnt do it as much I love photography. There are more important things in life, religion and money have a lot to answer for. Too many innocents ahhhhhh it gets me mad!!!

Personally I only wish I could do it. I'm too scared to document the bad local areas let alone visit a real war zone and I really hate that.

Personally i wish you luck!! Burnley had an episode today, police, dogs etc. I don't think i would have liked to have gone down there. I am interested in war photos just for the shock value but sod doing it myself - too much of a wuss. You go to the local bad areas and your worried about your gear getting nicked never mind the violence.

Nothing but respect for the people who have courage to do this.

Great respect for these guys, not something I'd have the bottle to do. Fantastic photo on the front of the Metro this morning - some Georgian troops on top of an APC.
I thought amazing photo, then caught myself going, ooh but the highlights are a bit blown, then smacked myself around the head a bit :D

Too true, some powerfull images there, massive respect for anyone who does this sort of journalism.

Those are very good photos pete. Very moving.

That's exactly the type of photography I hope to be involved in...hopefully within the next 5-10 years. I want to be a war photojournalist and take photos that make a difference.

Looks like it's ended but why did Russia bomb Gori just before the announcement when it was already clear that Gerogian forces had retreated from the city much earlier? Looks like other media individuals were killed also :(

Surprised Georgia provoked Russia in such a way, surely they knew they would take advantage of the situation. I could never do war photography, documenting pain and misery might make great photo's but it feels kind of like exploiting human suffering.

I think that's a bit of political naivety on their part, hoping the US would help out maybe - not in an election year though

The last picture in that set really brings it home though. War - always about politics and/or religion....

Should have listened to John Lennon....

It really isn't explotation.

James Nachtwey: The worst thing is to feel that as a photographer I am benefiting from someone else's tragedy. This idea haunts me. It's something I have to reckon with every day because I know that if I ever allowed genuine compassion to be overtaken by personal ambition, I will have sold my soul. The only way I can justify my role is to have respect for the other person's predicament. The extent to which I do that is the extent to which I become accepted by the other; and to that extent, I can accept myself.

^ Good quote.

And I don't see it as explotation becuase any photojournalist should be doing the job becuase they have a passion for photography and a responsibility for journalism.

I'm certainly not doing it for the money, there's not alot of money in it at all.

Such emotional pictures, but the one that captured me the most was on the front of the Sunday Times last weekend. The man was cradling another dead man and the look of pain on his face said it all :( terrible, terrible situation.

i would love to have the oportunity to do this sort of documentative photography! those images hit hard! real hard, i would love to be able to show the world what is going on outside of their peaceful suburbs/villages. i admire anyone doing this right now!!

its a great shame that photographer lost his life but he was obviously doing what he loved and i doubt he would have regreted it. he was showing the world the tyrant that Putin really is!
