What version of program should I get? A quick guide to whats best will help me lots in not getting the wrong stuff.

So far I have used DPP but i find it rathe limiting.

Also what advantages are there on lightroom vs photoshop? I heard lightroom is easier to use hence my inclination towrads it

Lightroom is easer to you and better for doing large numbers of pictures, you can download the trial for both from adobe and it is the full product for 30 days.

Lightroom 3 is due out fairly soon so it may be worth waiting for that.

Mac

The current version of Lightroom is 2.7. This has all the latest camera support. Now if you buy a boxed version it'll be a different version. Don't worry though Adobe provide free updates to the latest version via the web site. If you download though it will be the latest version.

There is also a public Beta LR3B2. Now you can download this but it is time limited, and there is a probability that the beta version of the catalogue ( the part of the program that hold all the edits, ) may not be compatible with the fully featured release.

You can download a 30 day trial version of the current version 2 , and a time limited version of beta 2 from the Adobe web site.

The advantages. Well Lightroom was designed specifically for photographers, whereas Photoshop was a Photographer /Designer product. You can't do text or similar Lightroom, plus due to the way it works pixel editing is not one of it's features. However fast image editing and catalogue is.

There are numerous tutorials on the webb, check out the Adobe or NAPP websites first. Plus of course books a plenty. Check out those by Scott Kelby and Martin Evening

I would have a look at the LR beta 3 and LR2.7 trial and wait for LR3 to officially come out, as it'll be about £100 to upgrade.

so if i get this right.

I have to wait for Lightroom 3 to come out

Buy it straight off interenet and not the boxed set from shop.

the LR3 is a full program not just an upgrade of some bigger program that without it I have nothing

did I get it right?

Lightroom 2 is what is available to buy now, either boxed in shops or by download from the Adobe web site. If you bought a version from the shop you would be prompted to download the (free) update to 2.7 from the Adobe site.

Lightroom 3 will is currently in Beta testing and, as such, can be downloaded from the Adobe website for free and used until it is released (probably in the next couple of months).

If you buy LR2 and want to upgrade to 3 when it comes out you will have to pay the upgrade fee.

You are probably best off playing with the Beta until the full version comes out and buying that as it will be the same price as LR2 is now.

Makes sense or have I had a glass of Friday night wine too many?

no actually made alot of sense indeed. some peeps seem to think better after a glass of wine :)

cheers

Remember that the LR3B2 version is not a fully featured version. OK to "play" with but may ( Probably) have additional features in the final release. Also Adobe have said the the catalogue of the Beta version will not be compatible with the final release, so you'll have to re import when you get the fully working version. May not be a major problem if you have a limited number of images, but cold be a re pain if you have a lot.
