I'm afraid as quite often the case, it's not which one is best but which one suits your needs.
If you want to take photos of wildlife or other subjects that are hard to get near to for instance, the S5 would probably be better because it will zoom in closer to the subject.
The S5 also has a vari-angle lcd which can be twisted around to let you take pics while holding the camera above your head for example

Landscapes and just general photography the G9 would probably have an advantage because the lens has a very slight wider angle, raw mode and would have a higher amount of detail due to the higher megapixel count.

I've probably just complicated things even further havent i

I definitely think the way to choose is to ask yourself what you want to take pictures of first and then find a camera with features that help you!

I have the Powershot Pro 1.

Ive survived on that to produce some great photos.

The problem with these non SLR's is that they are poor in low light environments and they product a LOT of digital noise. Hence why ive upgraded to the 40D DSLR

You can put the G9 in ya bag or coat pocket alot easier to carry with you all the time.

Hi Emily!! Just checked out the list you provided. The list is unending..But I'm quite impressed..Checkcost was really having a lot of stores and the price they were offering was also reasonalble as compared to others..Bristol Cameras is offering £225 for the canon S5 and Checkcost had it for £194..I think you are gonna save a lot of money..Good for you.Anyways, to my opinion the right choice can be made only depending on the purpose..You have to first decide the need for the camera and then choose the one that suits your need..The list you provided had some good Nikon cameras .You can consider them as well. They are equally good.
