Hi All,

I am wanting to add a boom arm to my lighting to better my portrate lighting.I have a heavy duty stand but on looking for good quality arms i am looking in excess of £100.
So the question i have is do yout think i can fix a wall mounted boom arm to plasterboard???? I had my garage boarded when we turned the garage into a studio.

cheers

In a word 'no' plasterboard just won't have the structural integrity to take the load on a small area.

You need to have something between the plasterboard and the wall and mount your fixings through the whole lot. In the past I've neatly cut a hole in the plasterboard, glue in a block of wood using a 'no nails' type adhesive, cut a thin, but bigger 'capping' piece of wood to cover this and redecorate this to either match the wall or gloss to match the other woodwork and then mount everything to this. All this may sound a bit of a pain but it is quite straight forward really and please don't be tempted by the latest expansion/toggle/dry line fixings, they are OK for basic shelving or items that don't project to far from the wall, but a boom arm extending over a meter with a few kilo's of light on the end is a very different matter.

I've used this type of boom in the past and really found them useful.
