Don't forget to factor in the temperature. Looks like it will be 25c up there every day next week.

Some ankle support is good, I really like German paraboots, you can get from ebay or other online stores quite reasonable nearly new.
Much cheaper than special walking boots.
Although a bit big and clumpy if kept clean you can wear almost anywhere and surprisingly comfortable.
They are waterproof enough to walk through streams etc. up to about 6 inches deep.

Get yourself a nice pair of Merrell trainer/hiking shoes very comfy

Walking boots/shoes are a bit like cameras. Other people can tell you about the features and their own experiences with them, but it's impossible to tell someone else what will work best for them. I suggest you go to a good outdoor store, let them fit you, and try on different pairs until you find the right ones. Most people find that their feet swell during the day, so go late in the afternoon and allow for higher temperatures too.

I'm not going to mention brands because fit is far more important. A previous poster suggested Merrell. Excellent brand, but not worth taking out of the box for me because they're far too wide. The boots/shoes must fit you if you're going to do a lot of walking (size, width, volume, heel cup etc).

i now wear scarpa 3 season all the time - my last pair were similar but a womens fit cos i got small feet(6) i had them for over 10 years they even went to everest base camp - i'd go to a decent outdoor shop an d try loads on ..

I still have a pair of Contour 3 season waterproof fabric boots that I bought in '04. They've lasted well, and only cost me £40, so Contour are worth a look. I'd also look at Altberg; my combat boots are Altbergs (Warriors) and I absolutely love them; that said they're a pig to break in!

If you have a Cotswold outdoor shop they are very good about measuring and trying lots of different ones to get the best fit.

Lots of good info there and it's been said already make sure you try before you buy. Get a good pair of boots and they'll last you years.
I'm a big Meindl fan myself but there's a few other good brands out there.

I'd take the most comfortable, supportive shoes that you already own. Under a week is nowhere near long enough to wear a pair of walking boots or shoes in. The danger is that you may well end up with severe blisters on your first day, ruining the rest of the holiday.

I bought a pair of salomon ones in South Africa two years ago, use them tonnes and they are still going strong.

You can get them in the UK oc (otherwise why mention them :P)

Thanks for all the replies guys - ended up with a pair of Merrells !
