Need some help please when I go on walks I am struggling with to many
lenses can anyone advise me on a good walkabout lens. I'm thinking about the Tamron 18-250 or 28-300 any thoughts anyone:shrug:

16~85 is a good walkabout or a 18~200. It really depends on how much telephoto you really do need?

Personally if you're just "walking about" you'll be without a tripod and the longer telephotos cause camera shake - handholding becomes alot harder you'll have to up the iso to get sharp shots.

What are your thoughts now?

I had a Tamron 28-300 VC which was a great range for a walkabout lens. The only real problem is that any superzoom loses a bit of sharpness at both ends, that's not to say it's a really big problem if you want the convenience of only one lens. The IQ of the lenses are generally pretty good, just not as sharp as a 50, 100, 200 or 300 primes. But for any non-critical general shots they are fine. Camera shake can be a problem with long zoom and slow shutter speeds but it's horses for courses really, convenience or quality.

Nikon 18-200 vr is a great walkabout lens. Obviously, IQ will suffer somewhat at 200mm but its a great solution for the one lens system
Do you need such a long zoom though? I much preferred a shorter standard zoom, say the Nikon 16-85 or Tamron 17-50 ƒ2.8, which is excellent, or if you can stretch the budget for a bit more IQ, a Nikon 17-55 f2.8.

I have a Nikon 18-200 on my D5000 and it's my most used lens, replacing the 18-105 and 70-300. I also carry a 35 in the bag for when I need something fast (low light or shallow DoF). Whole kit fits in a Toploader bag so very convenient (although I'm moving over to m4/3 for even smaller kit...)

That said, the 18-200 is quite expensive for what it is and the zoom creep on earlier models may annoy some.
An alternative is the 18-105, which is cheap as chips and not at all bad. Far superior to the 18-55 IMO (more useful focal length range, doesn't rotate on focus so CPL friendly, instant manual focus override, etc). Not quite a superzoom, but 105 might be long enough for a 'walkaround'?
