Hi guys. i used a friends Nikon the other day and really liked his 18-200 VR lens. i do quite a bit of automotive photography and would find such a lens very useful indeed... but... im a canon man myself and a canon man on a budget. i have seen Sigmas 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS lens which looks great value for money and was wondering if anyone has any personal experience of it or can offer an alternative?
all answers and opinions welcome

I have the non-OS version as my walkaround lens and I'm very happy with it. My brother-in-law has the OS version and to my mind that feels a bit more solidly constructed - and reviews suggest it's better optically too.

My 18-200 is a bit soft at the long end, but I consider that a price worth paying for the flexibility it offers. And at medium-wide lengths it's plenty sharp enough for my needs.

This is a 100% crop from an image taken at f=72mm. I think it's quite impressive. (Bear in mind that if you could see the whole image at this size it would be roughly 3 feet by 2 feet.)

One other factor that might be relevant to you is that the bokeh (OOF backgrounds) it produces can be pretty ugly. Here's the full image from which that close-up was taken. Personally I think the background is quite jarring.

If you want an all-in-one lens, on balance I would have no hesitation in recommending it.

:agree: ... I have the Nikkor version and love the versatility even if the bokeh can sometimes be an acquired taste ...

I believe the Sigma version is well rated too but obviously cannot comment or compare ... :D

As a walkabout the 18 - 200mm range can be extremely useful especially in such a compact lightweight package ... ;)

:p

another dumbass question from me... what exactly is bokeh? im guessing it reffers to that which is oof in the background/forground?

remind me to read posts properly and not post myself after too many Gin's lol.

so does anyone have any personal experience of this sigma with OS?

I have the OS version, but don't have many samples with it, but here's a few, all with a 20D (they all seem to be at tye wide end).
They would all probably have had some PPing, usually levels stuff and a bit of USM.
