I had hardly heard of VPNs until recently and now I seem to hear about them more and more. Most recently I read about folk using (with only limited success) to try to by-pass Three's Feel-at-Home throttling (which Three won't admit to but is common knowledge... sorry, I digress).

I was wondering what sort of usage there is of them amongst TP users.

Found this site https://www.top10vpn.com/best-vpn-for-uk/ which offers its own recommendations, good info about VPNs and links to a lot of the big players.

My son is travelling in Asia at the moment and very much reliant on local wifi - I was thinking of signing him up for a service even if I decided that it wasn't something I necessarily needed! Worried about him having to use unsecured local wi-fi to log into his bank etc.

I have used Private Internet Access for around 18 months - it is very good but not on that list so draw your own conclusions.

The cost is approx £25 a year, it works unnoticed in the background most of the time and they have servers all over the world which you can choose to connect to.

Speed- wise you won't notice the difference when connected for most internet stuff and there is a helpline for any slow speed complaints.

ps - from memory I think the £25 covers 5 family machines but you might care to confirm that.

I use CyberGhost VPN and have done for some years and find it excellent and you can sign up on a monthly basis as well.

Some of the more unusual advantages are Data Compression - very handy since I use a capped Dongle for my Internet connection and it can save me a lot of bandwidth.

Since I have a dynamic IP Address on my Dongle it gives me a static IP so that I don't continually have to enter the special security questions from my bank etc because they detect a different IP Address.

It also features an Ad blocker and detects dodgy websites and prevents me going to them.

All good reasons to use one as far as I'm concerned.

Interesting that PIA didn't even feature on that Top Ten I posted, yet it is well-priced by comparison with the top-rated VPNs there - and it does allow 5 machines to be covered.

VPN is a good choice when you are at abroad with some dodgy wifi services. most of the services will cost around 20-30 quids a year and some offer lifetime with 80 . If your son's visit is for less than 30 days, try okay freedom option. it is free for 30 days but limits for 2.5 gb only. which will suffice for most of emails, basic browsing and any transactions.

IPVanish are a good one, support is good and they have a large number of Country servers.

After a bit more research, including the suggestions here, I've decided that PIA (Private Internet Access) looks like the best paid-for option for my needs - but for my son's needs as he is travelling it looks like the free service offered by Tunnelbear could be ideal.

Just installed it on my own phone and it's simplicity itself. 500GB free should be plenty for banking transactions and I just got another 1GB added for tweeting about the service.

Thanks again for all the suggestions, very useful.

A vote for Cyber ghost for me. Thein servers are fast, they are in the correct countries. And they do not retain identifiable information. Combined with a few other techniques it has proven to be pretty good.

Just a point ... how tunnelbear ensure a 500mb data cap without logging anything?
