Vivian Maier and Jane Bown

Do you think they both had compulsive behaviours and this was channeled into thier photography.

It's almost scary.

If you’re implying OCD then I would have thought Bown‘s methods were almost the opposite of that.

Hadn't thought of it that way. Maybe JB was a little bit shy. It's the vibe I got from watching the documentary. Keen to get the photo and leave.

I think that many photographers have that sort of behaviour pattern, which is why they do it.

What I find most interesting about the Maier pictures that I've seen, is how she captures movement, that so-called "decisive moment".

I bought a monograph of Jane Bown's photographs many years ago. She made some wonderfully memorable photographs, that stick in your mind. Just like the similarly talented and low key photographer Fay Godwin, who worked in another genre.

Not all great photographs need to be "in your face"

I hadn't heard of Jane Bown until I saw this thread, but a quick Google shows that I do know her work. As is so often the case, women photographers are overlooked no matter how good they are. I prefer her style to that of other, far more famous male photographers. It's more intimate, more about the person, than the style.

This one of Samuel Beckett is brilliant, imo.
