Hello - I wonder if anyone can shed any light on this problem.

I have 2 laptops, one with Windows XP and a recently acquired one with Vista. I generally shoot in Raw and burn a cd/dvd to archive. If I try to view the raw images on the Vista loaded laptop from cd/dvd it cannot find the files - as though the cd/dvd was empty, however the XP loaded laptop can view the same Raw images. The Vista laptop can see and load the Raw images from my camera, Nikon D50, and does burn them to cd/dvd but then cannot view them again from the cd/dvd, the XP laptop can view the same images.

I have used Nikon Picture Project on both laptops and recently PS Elements 6 and I experience the same problems on either - therefore making me believe it is a Vista problem as this is the common denominator.

I have contacted Microsoft but have not received a reply yet - has anyone else had this problem with Vista??

Thanks for any help.

Mark

are you using windows to burn the cds? if so try using a 3rd part software like neuro. not sue what causes the problems but cds burnt on vista wont work on xp computers.

Make sure you 'Close' the session after creating a CD / DVD on the XP PC, the Cd's will then work on any other PC, if you don't close the session the disc's will only work on a PC running the same software as your XP PC (usually).

Thanks for the responses - I am using Nikon Picture Project and PSE to burn the cd/dvd. The problem is'nt with the XP laptop but with the Vista laptop, the XP seems to work with any cd/dvd.

Which laptop do you use to create the CD, XP or Vista?

The problem being pointed out is that unless you've "closed" the CD it might not be readable on the other PC.

I am sorry about this I have not explained it clearly, the problem is not with the XP loaded laptop - it burns cds/dvds and reads them ok, including the ones burned on the Vista loaded laptop.

The problem is with the Vista laptop - it reads RAW images from my camera but not from a cd or dvd from any laptop with any os. It can read jpegs from cd/dvd but just cannot see Raw files.

Thanks for your help

Is it "reading" the raw files from your camera through the software supplied with your camera?

If so you will need to either read the cd through said software or load the appropriate RAW codec for windows to read natively

Sounds to me like Vista is incorrectly trying to 'hide' the raw files as it has identified them as system files. Especially if you can see the jpegs but not raws. What is the suffix (3 letter extension) of Nikon RAW files? Can you try turning off the 'hide system files' option?

If you don't know how - reply - I can't tell you how now as I need to be in front of my Vista PC at home to remind myself how, I'm at work now and have got XP...

Thanks to all for the replies and suggestions.

I can read the raw images from my camera with Vista so does that mean the codec has been installed?

Thanks Turbotoes - this is a difficult one but I think I will investigate Freesters' suggestion that Vista might be hiding the files incorrectly as system files.

It would be interesting to know if anyone else is having this problem i.e. Nikon camera shooting in Raw saving to cd/dvd on a Vista loaded laptop then unable to see the files on cd/dvd?

Anyone having similar problems or is it just me?

that is simple enough to do,
If you don't how, read further and if you, don't :)

Go to Start menu, control panel, (For gods sake click on "classic view" on top left hand side of window, don't use the lobotomised default view!!:bang:)
then choose "folder options", top tab "view", below in the advanced settings section, 2nd yellow folder down, untick "show hidden files and folders" then apply. you can also untick "hide protected operating system files" just to be sure, (but if windows is so messed up it thinks raw files belong to it, then you headed for real pain soon:()

Please don't forget to go back and reset those two options when you are done checking, as if you are an inexperienced user you could get yourself in to trouble deleting stuff you should not. Please don't take offence at that, as I have no idea of your level of IT competance (god, I wish I could spell!!)

good luck.

Thanks again TT, and no offence taken I am not the most confident in the IT world. Unfortunately the hidden file fix has not worked - I am beginning to think I may need to wait for Microsoft to respond! I am not holding my breath!

Thanks to everyone that has helped.

What application are you reading the files with?

Also are you using 32 or 64 bit Vista?

EDIT : OOPS! sorry, I just realised you're talking about Nikon raw files, so obviously DPP and Canon's codec are irrelevant. Nonetheless I can see no reason why Vista would not list them.
/EDIT

I have a DVD of raw files burned to DVD with my XP desktop PC back in October 2006. I just put the DVD in my current laptop, running Vista X64 and the files are all listed exactly as one would expect. I did not have to jump through any hoops to get Vista to list them.

I'm afraid I have no idea what your problem is, or how to fix it, but there should be no problem with vanilla Vista. Of course, Vista can not display the files unless you install a suitable codec - preferably the latest one from Canon, not the old and unsupported Microsoft codec - or open them with software that can, such as DPP or Lightroom etc..

Thanks PsiFox and tdodd, I am uploaded the codec file as suggested, although a later version it did not make any difference.

I will persevere with looking at the cd/dvd drivers and check their currency - failing that I will ask a favour of our IT dept at work, even though that means I may have to be nice to them!!

Thanks everyone but I think this will require someone sat infront of the laptop - I will let you know how I get on.

You could try Googling for the problem. I tried this search....

http://www.google.co.uk/search?sour...n-GBGB270GB270&q=vista+can't+see+files+on+dvd

and found a couple of possible answers. Whether any of them fit your circumstances I could not say, but it's worth a shot. e.g. there is one comment about ASPI layers being a bit crook. That sounds plausible. There is another about Roxio screwing things up. That wouldn't surprise me either. I'm sure there are other possibilities further down the list.

I do remember, a while ago, when Vista first came out, that I had problems with my home built PC and an NEC DVDRW drive. Vista installed perfectly well from the drive and, once installed, was then unable to use the drive. I tracked down the problem with Google and found I had to make some small adjustment to the registry. It was a kludge for a problem at the time. Since then I've reinstalled Vista a couple of times on that machine and all has been well. Maybe there are some Windows updates that fix the problem. Are you fully up to date with your Windows updates? Do you have SP1 installed yet?

I know Nero came in for a lot of flack with its Vista incompatability and I no longer use it. In fact I don't have any CD/DVD burning software installed at the moment - other than the native Vista stuff. That works fine for me. A lot of software can be more trouble than it's worth, like McAfee and Norton, for example, or Nokia PC Suite. I do like to run my machines very clean - I have six Vista machines and one XP machine at home - and for me they work perfectly.

Thanks again, my first port of call was the microsoft download/update site and SP1 is loaded, I must beyond that I am a little lost - I cannot understand how the Vista laptop can write to the cd but then not read it? The latest codec is loaded as suggested I am baffled.

Thanks for all your assistance.

Do you have any third party DVD software installed, like Roxio or Nero, or any little nifty shareware utilities etc.? If you have a way to reinstall them again it might be worth uninstalling them and rebooting to see if Vista can get a hold of the files left to its own devices. Maybe the DVD/CD software is broken and needs a reinstall anyway.

Is it just Windows explorer that is unable to see the files or are all applications left in the dark? e.g. if you try to do a file/open operation from any other app, and look for *.* file names, are they all blind to the files? Try downloading Treesize Pro from Jam software - http://www.jam-software.com/treesize/index.shtml - that will often show files that Windows hides. At least that might determine whether Vista can see them at all but is hiding them from you for sime reason.

What happens if you create a regular text file and save and burn it as a .nef file? Can that be read?

I'm afraid I don't really have any solid ideas. These are just the sort of straw clutching motions I'd go through to try to come up with some clues. If nothing else works then you might consider a clean install of the OS. There is seldom anything more refreshing for a system :)

Well without doing a thing my problem has fixed itself. After my last post I basically did not review any images on my laptop loaded with Vista - until just now, I stuck in a previously unreadedable DVD with only Raw images on it and hey presto PS elements opened the images!

But why?????

It may be all the automatic updates the laptop receives but who cares it is fixed.

A big thank you to all who contributed to this thread - it was really appreciated.

You never know I might upload some photos!

Thanks again.
